Assembly Now – Is Music Supposed to Cheer You Up Or Not?

Assembly Now - not bears.

When Mrs. Toad saw me looking at their website her first response was: ‘You’re not buying a bloody stuffed bear are you?’ A stuffed bear? Yes, perfect for the pantry, darling. No, sweetheart, it’s just a band website.

And a half decent band indeed, at that. This lot really remind me that apart from all the navel-gazing and earnest emotional nonsense, indie rock ‘n’ roll is supposed to cheer you right up. It wasn’t the best song on The Killers’ first album, but it may have had the best message, because it’s indubitably glamorous indie rock ‘n’ roll for me.

Hot Club de Paris are this year’s premier exponents of indie rock as fun, and Art Brut and Maximo Park threaten to make it go blockbuster with their imminent new albums. Assembly Now fit right in this sort of zone with a brand of exciting, energetic music that is simply a joy to have on the stereo. After this year’s abject failure of indie heroes such as Bloc Party and their ilk, Song, by Toad is pinning its hopes on good-time, punchy, pogo-indie-pop to rescue 2007. Assembly Now, step right up…
