Jeremy Warmsley – The Art of Fiction

Art of Fiction

This album has been a colossal disappointment to me, I’m afraid. The only song I knew by Jeremy Warmsley for a long time was the superlative Dirty Blue Jeans which ends with the splendid line ‘we fucked all night in my brother’s old bedroom’.  This song has a rattling rhythm, perfectly embellished with electronica and eccentrica.

As a result, I was hugely looking forward to the album, but it is just too full of polished pop for me. Amazon recommends Get Cape Wear Cape etc.. to purchasers, and I think this rather sums it up. The Art of Fiction is really just a nice acoustic pop album overlaid with electronic effects here and there.   So, for all it is good at what it is supposed to be, it’s too far outside my rather narrow taste for me to ever get into it, I think.

Still, Dirty Blue Jeans is a great, great song, and have a listen – you may like it more than I do.

Nope, don’t think I do like it more than you.

Which is quite odd as it would normally tick the right boxes for me.

    Oh well, pass.

(but, to track back a wee bit, yes – the closing line for DBJ is a good one – and just a little too close to the truth for me at one point, a long time ago… and enough said.)

Colin, y’old pervert, don’t back out on us now! Tell, tell.

Shame you don’t like it. I have to confess that this was one of my albums of last year, and on relection, with some distance, I’d probably still have it in there. I think he’s a super-talented bloke. Nice guy too. But there you go – don’t know what that says about my taste or not…

It’s very difficult to dislike the music of someone you actually like personally, I’d say.

It’s also unusual to find myself disagreeing with you – it’s almost a relief, in a way!

I really liked this album. My main criticism though is that it doesn’t feel like an album, just a collection of songs… which I suppose it is, a mix of his best EP tracks and a few new ones. I do think he’s bloody good though.

That’s you and the Daily Growl, Lily. I respectfully disagree, but I accept I am going to be outvoted on this one.
