Skybox – Arco Iris

This band could easily catch the ear of the right group of people at the right time and become a major cult phenomenon overnight. They almost certainly won’t, but they have that sort of infectious pop vibe that you can imagine the cool kids in California suddenly making their Summer barbecue soundtrack, were they to decide they wanted a bit of fun for a change. That’s just a big if, of course, because they aren’t exactly very hip, these chaps. But they could be – it’s all just a matter of your approach.
Sliding through the genres, but remaining at all times pop, Skybox spice their tunes with fistfuls of ragtime, bounce pop and polished soul. Not all of it works. Occasionally it lapses too far into the polished pop for my taste, and loses the playful spirit which I love – slightly reminiscent of early Barenaked Ladies at times.
I have no idea whether to recommend this album or not, really. I love large bits of it, I really do, but during its less wonderful moments I find myself wondering a bit. No, definitely too much fun. Go to CDBaby and buy one. Summer happiness guaranteed, I’m almost certain.
