Poor Old Jesus

Jesus Wept

I’ve recommended it often enough, so I presume by now that you all read Ed Brayton’s amazing labour of love Dispatches from the Culture Wars? Well it can be a bit heavy going at times – fairly emotive debates on aspects of politics, religion and civics and all sorts of things – so approach with a little caution, but it is genuinely superior stuff and never fails to be thought-provoking.

Anyhow, today he has mentioned of my all time favourite put-downs, and given you heartless bastards seem to enjoy a snappy put-down at least as much as I do, I thought I’d pass it on. It’s possible this is an oldie – it sounds like it should be – but it’s the first time I’ve heard it, so here we go…

If you aren’t American you probably don’t know about uber-Christian, uber-Conservative lunatic Tom DeLay. Well suffice to say he is one of the most viciously unpleasant snakes in the American political undergrowth. Anyhow, having been slung out on his ear for being caught on the swindle with campaign funds he has now got a new mission

“God has spoken to me,” DeLay said. “I listen to God, and what I’ve heard is that I’m supposed to devote myself to rebuilding the conservative base of the Republican party, and I think we shouldn’t be underestimated.”

To which Ed responds:

To borrow a phrase from the brilliant Jeff Stilson: “poor Jesus, first he’s crucified and now he has to spend his weekends talking to Tom DeLay. When will the suffering end?”

Song, by Toad had a very enjoyable little snigger at that one.

i can’t believe no one’s commented about this. so i will. : ) tom delay is without a doubt one of the lowest life forms ever to crawl upon the earth. i had quite the discussion about him with mentok at one point wherein i delineated why this is so. the scariest part of it all is that the people of his district would have kept re-electing him regardless of his criminality and low-lifedness, because he had the power in congress. these are the very same conservative christians who would condemn the homosexuals and pro-choice citizens and believe everyone has a right to carry a concealed weapon and stem cell research is killing unborn children and i could go on and on and now you see why i hesitated to comment. whew!

    poor jesus, indeed.

Go Marcy! Go Marcy! Let out the hatred, let it out!

It never ceases to amaze me, the sort of vicious, nasty little bottom-feeders that people are capable of voting for. It just goes to show that left or right, people value partisanship more than their own consciences.
