The Doledrums – New Edinburgh Psychobilly

The Doledrums

The Doledrums can be found here, and are a recently discovered (by me anyway) Edinburgh band who play an upbeat psychobilly style of music that I really like.

Psychobilly is generally a genre I’ve always wanted to like more than actually liked – I hear a stray Cramps song and really enjoy it, for example, but if I try and listen to an entire album it often just doesn’t quite do it for me.  These lads, however, are excellent.  I put them in the podcast a few weeks ago but I thought they definitely deserved a post of their own.

I don’t know what sets this apart, but there’s something upbeat and spiky about the rhythm which I like, and that elusive quality of being able to write a tune that sticks in your heard doesn’t exactly hurt either.  Basically, when they are on I tap my feet, bounce up and down and cheer right up.  And you can’t say much fairer than that.

I can listen to The Cramps until the cows come home, get drunk on moonshine, crank up Johnny B. Goode on the Victrola, then poo al over the living room. But when it comes to so much else in the genre, I’m right with you. I’ve tried to love The Meteors, but can only manage a vague like. But this stuff I’m having no problems with!

I did see the Cramps once in concert, and even drank wine from a bottle that not thirty seconds prior had been shoved down the front of Lux’s spandex tights. It was actually a cheeky little red, merlot if I recall correctly…

Oh, and I FUCKING LOVE Out of Time by the Meteors. Just not the rest of it all that much.

Cheeky? But I thought you said it had been down the FRONT of his pants. More likely it was a turgid little Pinot. He, he, I said “Pinot.”

Have you just been to their gig tonight? I wish I could have gone but it just wasn’t possible. Next time for sure though.
