Toadcast #7 – The Chillout Tent

Toad FM

Yes, we’re back and this time we’ve relaxed a little.  There’s a bit less cussing and ranting in this podcast than usual – in fact virtually no ranting at all, which is probably as much of a surprise to me as it is to you.

I’m looking at late evening music this week because Mrs. Toad and I were recently talking about the Chillout craze which kicked off about six or seven years ago. It descended into electronic muzak unfortunately, but there were some good things in there at the beginning, so I thought I’d have a look at it.  I’ve thrown in some stuff I find nice and eveningy and relaxing as well just to stop it becoming too tedious.

i enjoyed this podcast, although i admit i do question the inclusion of a couple tracks, and i wonder at the exclusion of some others, but on the whole, quite nice.

oh, and i rather miss the ranting . . . but i suppose you can only rant when the spirit moves you, am i right?

oh yeah–i loved that carmina burana piece. i recently sang that with more than 150 people and a full orchestra and to hear it stripped down like that is really something. : )

With a full orchestra it must be quite intimidating – it’s a pretty all-consuming piece of music when the shouting starts.

And I did try to mix it up Marcy. I thought there’d be no point just throwing together all the chillout classics, which anyone can get in Sainsbury’s for a fiver, and I tried to put in some stuff I found quite emotionally satisfying but that mightn’t be considered classic chillout stuff.

you mixed it up quite well, i don’t mean to criticize. the chillout tent is large and very inclusive.

and yeah, it was something else to be a part of such a grand performance. highly emotionally satisfying, as it were. : )

Well I’m delighted you liked it – it’s not been too popular, this one, so it’s good to get feedback from someone. If anything I feel a little guilty for not putting enough obscure or unsigned bands in, which I like to do if I can.

OK, I’ve finally listened to this puppy and the upshot is that I don’t really like any of the songs that much but that the mix just works somehow. The whole is more than the sum of its parts. I suppose it was Shatner who put it over the top.

I nearly Shatnerred myself when I got a load of this:
