Toadcast #9 – The Folly of Youth

Toad FM

I’m trying to kill two birds with one stone with this podcast.  Firstly, I am throwing in a couple of songs that I wanted to put on the Contrast Podcast episode entitled Young a few weeks ago.  I was away at my brother’s wedding at the time, and I never got the chance so here they are.

Secondly, a good while ago a regular reader of mine called Allen Lulu tagged me with one of these internetty meme thingies whereby you write about the music that was in the charts the year you turned 18.  Well for me that year was 1993, but the chart music was abysmal, so I couldn’t possibly do that to you.  Instead I had a look at what I was listening to myself from that year and came across so many excellent old songs I haven’t heard for ages that a quick post turned into an entire podcast.  And this is that podcast – me at age 18.

soooooo you’re 32! i love finding out people’s ages haha.

Oh dear. Is this the Todcast equivalent of the new Rilo Kiley LP? I detest songs 1 & 2….with a venegence. Not keen either on The Levellers, The Long Blondes, Blind Melon or Soul Asylum.

Having said that, I’m sure that much of what I liked in 1981 got on the tits of folk who are 12 years younger than me….

I’ll say more when I get round to listening..

    Ciao for now.

31 until November Jamila – cheek!

It’s a tad autobiographical JC, so it may not be all that interesting for many. Just seemed like a far more interesting way of answering Allen’s question.

I’ll keep the bloody track list a secret next time – ungrateful wretches!

fantastic! I adore this answer. Can’t wait to hear it!

The Spin Doctors, Toad? And still, no Ugly Kid Joe or Gin Blossoms.

    Campfires & Battlefields

Ah, memories. I was 24 and just starting graduate school in 1993. At the end of that year I’d meet the future Mrs. Campfires & Battlefields and begin to shack up.

Forgive me father for I have sinned. I have a soft place in my heart for the Spin Doctors. In 1990-91 they were a struggling, weed-soaked jam band from NYC who made their reputation by gigging relentlessly and encouraging the taping and distribution of their live shows. I saw them play 4 times, including once at an outdoor fraternity party at a small college in Geneva, NY. Probably the most fun I’ve ever had at a show, and I still have the tape somewhere. They went astray pretty quickly, but I used to fucking love them.

1993 produced some great records, like the first Tindersticks record, Mezcal Head by Swervedriver, Chrome by the Catherine Wheel, Souvlaki by Slowdive, Fuzzy by Grant Lee Buffalo, yadda yadda yadda.

That Ugly Kid Joe crack was pretty low, China. There’s no need to descend to that level of discourse. Personal growth is all about mistakes after all.

The only reason I didn’t include Ugly Kid Joe is because I associate it more with my last year in high school than my first at university. So sucks to both of you.

I am not apologising for that Spin Doctors song either. It’s a POP SONG people, it’s light disposable and fun. Even curmudgeonly old amphibians get to just not give a shit and enjoy something from time to time.

Ugly Kid Joe must have been banging/related to the MTV editorial staff becuase that bloody song of theirs was never off MTV. I feel soiled just thinking about it.

Hey, I liked that Ugly Kid Joe song when it was all over MTV. But I was also eight years old in 1993. Erm…
