Devon Sproule's tinny warbling. Well that may be a tad mean, but I can't really say I've ever caught the Devon Sproule bug either. EotR wasn't a bad set mind. Shara can't half torture a guitar when she gets in the mood. It must be virtually impossible to capture this on a recording. Presumably one of the be red flags of labeldom - make sure you can generate a record that matches the energy of what you fell in love with to begin with. Mind you, I often find it to work the other way round - make sure that a band can still cut the mustard live, no matter how good they are recorded.

Thanks Matthew for an enjoyable and enlightening interview.

I am a real Johnny come lately on this one....! Having only just found the Songbytoad blog yesterday, I thought a leisurely Friday amble around the blog might be in order.

I delved into this interview with My Brightest Diamond first because they made a big impression on me at the back end of 2007.

I discovered the band as I was walking past the Big Top at the Green Man Festival in Aug 07. I was heading for some food past the tent as the band came on and I literally stopped in my tracks - and I was sucked into watch, feelingg mesmerised. What a voice. What a performer. What great songs. And fab covers.

It seemed a total performance - great music, showmanship - with the guitarship really throwing himself about the stage - and yet with possibly more to offer. still.

Unfortunately - and this happens, I guess - the album didn't quite live up to expectations. Neither did a second gig at the End of the Road Festival the following month. This was largely because the guitarist had mysteriously changed to a jobbing session guy and Shara Worden, the singer, seemed maybe a bit jetlagged or lacklustre. However, I would rather listen to a tired diva like her over Devon Sproule's tinny warbling, any day.

Ciao Stevie Disco

Thank you very much chaps. It's definitely better than the first, I think. Next one might be harder as there's a lot more material.

Erm, whoops, sorry Marcy.

Yes, C&B, the big problem with the WGC one was simply that I didn't have a recording device, so I had to do it all from memory. Robert said plenty of interesting stuff, just I kind of had to make it up after the fact.

I think this was an excellent interview. Really excellent. A nice mix of the usual insightful Toadanalysis and lengthy quotes where she can make her point in context. I thought it flowed a bit better than the Willard Grant Conspiracy interview, although I found that one pretty interesting too.

I think she knew exactly how influential a blogger she was dealing with, if you know what I mean. I would be amazed if she's ever read a single word on this in all honesty, but no reason not to ask.

And I don't mean she's not confident, I just mean that the real Shara comes across as being only available to a few people. If she doesn't trust you I'm sure she'd be just as charming and engaging, just there'd be this invisible wall. I still don't entirely know whereabouts I stood myself.

And yes, I use a recording device. Then I wrote out all the substantial quotes when I got home, then tried to put them in an order that flowed well, then tried to fill in the bits inbetween to try and give an impression of the conversation that brought these things up.

It's tricky, but it's quite satisfying.
