When I first started using mp3s I was dead against the shuffle function and couldn't get out of the habit of listening to and buying whole albums. But gradually my habits changed and I hardly ever listened to an album. Now, after a few years of the shuffle I'm getting a bit tired of it and often go back to listening to whole albums. But when I'm listening to my i-pod on the bus or whilst walking somewhere I don't have time to listen to whole album so tend to always stick that on shuffle. The problem now is that I've got so much music if I listened to whole albums a whole tract of artists would just not get listened to cos I don't have enough time. I use mp3 blogs to sample music and always buy the rest of the album if I like it, but being a poor student unfortunately my purchasing power is a bit limited! So I do end up with lots of bands who I only have 2 or 3 songs for. And because of this I think I'll keep using the shuffle function for a while until I'm a bit richer. I do think it's a shame that I don't really know an album like I used to though. When I bought a new cd it used to go on repeat until I really felt like I understood it totally. That just doesn't happen anymore.

totally with you on the purchase power of the random function - since I got an mp3 player I've bought loads of records/downloads solely to make them pop up when I was least expecting it. I would never think to listen to them without this.

Well that's what I rather think as well. Perhaps the big thing about the download revolution is that it has liberated the passive music fans from this expensive and attentive mode of listening. And we're all pretty passive fans of some things.

Mp3s are great for sampling and guilty pleasure songs, but I still prefer listening to an entire album (in a stereo, far from the computer) when it comes to music that I truly love.

Great post Toad, I couldn't have put it better myself. I almost never listen to the radio, and I've even stopped listening to podcasts as much as I used to - I have so much music on my hard drive that I like but haven't had time to listen to for so long that it's further up the priority list. There are still a couple of podcasts I subscribe to, but I find more new music on blogs than I do on podcasts these days. And I'm buying more music than ever before as a result of this - totally the opposite of what <a href="http://blogs.guardian.co.uk/music/2007/11/louis_pattison_thurs_am_pic.html" title="some music industry commentators" rel="nofollow"> think is going on.

Hello You.

I did an iTunes "Random" generated playlist on the show a few weeks back! Ahead of the zeitgeist yet again...

I don't ever "randomise" my listening habits normally simply because of the same reasons & also because I have such a huge collection of digi-musics on my computer.

I kind of feel like a fogiey bemoaning the slow erosion of the 'physical' in the music-sphere, but I guess that's just how things will be for the remainder of my listening life. I like CDs, not in the same way as I liked vinyl, & I buy regularly (4,000+ discs Vs. 500 vinyl - the unevenness being a result of selling off the vast majority of my 12"s following too many property moves back in the 90s, with a view to replace with CDs for ease of transport. O, how I regret that). I like the touching & looking & readin associated with the packaging. I am not too enamoured with the 'disposable' attitude towards mucis these days. I guess that will change at some point, years in the future perhaps. I do get excited about finding the elusive rarity or a brand new song no one has heard & blows me away etc. — the mp3 era is rather excellent for that kind of thing.

i have no playlists, a ton of mix cds and a nice old fashioned turntable.

it's a strange having several hundred gigabytes of music, a spare room full of legally acquired cd's and a bookcase filled with vinyl and realising if there was a major incident dans ma maison i would probably only save my old touch and go records and not much else.
ask me to sell or delete something and it's a different story though.
