Toadcast #19 – The Scotchcast

Back at long last, would you believe. After the abortive attempt at a Christmas podcast and then the IT disaster in Toad Hall – when my retarded computer ground to a halt and had to have its entire operating system reinstalled – I have finally managed to record the 19th Toadcast. Sorting out the IT department was not at all as easy as it should have been, so it’s taken ages to get to the point where I could record one again.
So, excuses over and done with, what am I going to inflict on you this time? The bloody Scots, that’s who. The Scottish music scene is an amazingly fertile one, so I thought I’d review 2007 and have a bit of a look forward to 2008. So I’ve pulled together some of the big guys like Malcolm Middleton, Emma Pollock and King Creosote and interspersed a few of the lesser known acts from around here to give you a nicely rounded look at what’s going on musically in the land of Buckfast and deep-fried Mars bars.

I will get round to listening to it….but the songs alone make me think this could be your best yet. A big big thank you.
Toad,
can you telephone me sometime Monday after 5.30pm? I have a proposition & a ‘citing idea wriggling in my kecks.
Stop it…
DC
Also looking forward to Aidan Moffat’s work being released. If he tours, we should make sure we get there…
If you like Gerry Mitchell, you should track down the work of Jock Scot – they are very similar.
Also….Dumb Instrument aren’t a million miles away from that type of sound either.
Enjoyably dreary….that’s a great description.
I like Dumb Instrument – saw them live over here last year actually, with The Twilight Sad & Popup. Great lineup. And I’d definitely go to an Aidan Moffat gig.
That was the first time I had heard Kid Canaveral – termendous stuff. It’s available on vinyl via Fence Records website – I’ve just ordered one…
Toad…..it is an honour to be give a mention at the same time as Frightened Rabbit.
Be Less Rude was my favourite single of 2007….the vinyl version is a slightly different even more indie-derivative mix.
Thanks must be given to Comrade Colin who shoved this on ‘And Before The Kiss’ a few weeks before the album came out
I think I may have heard of Dumb Instrument from him too. He plays all hopeless, but he something of an ear for the good ‘uns, does Colin.
Dear Mr. Toad,
I do like to hear about your drinking habits. Moreover, it’s nice to see Mother and the Addicts in your set. Include them in every podcast from here on out! A small suggestion (that, in thinking about it, may not appeal to everyone).
Sincerely,
China
P.S. What are kecks??
Trousers, China. He was being naughty. Again.
Pure brilliant man. Fuckin’ brand new. Ah’m gonnae get aw mah muckers tae listen tae this wan ya bass.
Muckers is cockney isn’t it mate? You’ve been in exile too long!
I liked Gerry Mitchell & Little Sparta. I suspect it may have been intentional on the part of Gerry and his cohorts, but they have captured the mood of the private-eye’s voice-over to a classic film noir.
The Pendulums produced more of a “What the fuck?!!” response; and respectively, I suspect that that may have also been precisely what they were going for.
I keep bastard forgetting to have the podcast running in one window, and have another one open for submitting comments, browsing etc.
I’m a bloody amateur!
Snigger. Just save it to your computer then play it from there.
Ah maybe it is, but it’s a good old Glasgae ned word tae. The original neds, and still the best.
You can take the ned out of Glasgow…
Quick segue, apropos of fuck all, what did you think of Two Gallants after?
Shite – enjoyed it so far but not really given it a concerted listen just yet. Bollocks, I must do that actually. Too busy listening to the bloody Lisps, who are your fault as well.
Pleasure is all mine.
Sorry I only just got ’round to listening to this. Top notch stuff as usual. I particularly enjoyed the Miff/Midd/Moff/Mitch passage near the beginning. And “Be Less Rude” is without question the best song of 2007. Just inspired.
[...] notice that Matthew of Song, By Toad has collected some great Scottish music of 2007. He calls it, “the Scotchcast.” Clever, [...]
