Live in Edinburgh This Week – 17th February 2008

Well it’s a pretty thin week in live music in Auld Reekie this week, which is excellent news for the health of both my liver and my marriage, probably in that order. To make matters worse (or better, depending on whether or not you’re my ears, my liver or my penis) Caribou cancelled their Cabaret Voltaire slot on Wednesday, which means I’m fishing about a bit to find anything to suggest this week.
Grammatics are playing Henry’s on Wednesday, but I’ve had a listen on their MySpace page and I’m not that keen. Support band Copy Haho seem decent though, so it might be worth popping along for a quick sniff.
Other than that, there’s Late of the Pier at Cabaret Voltaire on Thursday, which I won’t be attending because I am through in Glasgow to see Band of Horses. Besides, I’m not all that convinced by them, frankly.
There’s only one group I really want to tip you off about this week then, and that’s also on the Thursday I’m not going to be around. Definitely one worth checking out though:
Thursday 21st February: Bricolage at The Voodoo Rooms.
Apparently something of a Franz Ferdinand favourite, for all that really matters, these chaps purvey a very 80s indie-rock sound that all you people who caught indie the first time around should probably approve of. I’m a bit frustrated I won’t be able to catch them actually, because they sound dead good.
Bricolage – Lucinda Said
Saturday 23rd February: Fairport Convention at the Queen’s Hall.
The chance to see one of the original bands to drag folk into the 20th Century is one I feel slightly ambivalent about. Yes, it might be great, but what I really want to see is Liege & Lief era Fairport with the mighty Dave Swarbrick and the beguiling Sandy Denny, and we all know that ain’t gonna happen, so I won’t be shelling out for this. It’s an interesting one though.
Fairport Convention – Crazy Man Michael Like all the best folk music, this is fucking brutal. I could barely even explain the story to Mrs. Toad without welling up just a little.)
Fairport Convention – Meet on the Ledge
And because Caribou bastarding well cancelled (drummer broke his wrist, I think) I’m going to post a couple of their tracks too, just to tease myself.
Caribou – After Hours
Caribou – Melody Day

I saw Copy Haho a while ago and it was 40 minutes of absolue unadulterated pop euphoria. I think it’ll be a cracking gig (and they’re back in Edinburgh next month, too).
Also, new monthly live music night the deadwood stage kicks off at Henry’s on Thursday, with Cheer (who have an album planned for this year on Benbecula records) headlining – definitely worth a look.

That is all.
Thanks Bart – Rob sent me that link through and I am just listening to Moa. They’re really rather good, but I’m not so sure about Cheer though.
Think it’ll cushion the blow for those needing their fix of live electronica this week (following the caribou cancellation), and it seems like they have some interesting nights planned over the coming months.
If anyone likes their sugar coated summery pop tunes with beach boys harmonies then Attic Lights support The Delays at Liquid Rooms on Wednesday night as well. It’s unadulterated Teenage Fanclub loving but might brighten up midweek – plus they played the very first Trampoline shows. worth a look if you are a pop fan.
The Delays make me want to punch dogs. But I am definitely curious about Attic Lights. Maybe not enough to cough up for an overpriced Delays ticket, but I will definitely check them out.
it’s a fair point – though don’t know the delays myself and feel I should warn you that punching dogs may get you into trouble with the sspca – but then you could just punch the sspca and get into trouble with the police while you’re at it. i am only going cause of attic lights and still to be totally convinced by them to be honest. very tight and polished – perhaps a bit too cheery for me though – great bunch of lads though. on another note – was at Sons and Daughters on Saturday night – mainly cause Broken Records were supporting – and am ashamed to say that my horrendous hangover and 2nd support band Black Kids forced me to leave before S&D got on stage! Was so up for giving them a second chance……but Black Kids ruined it. Would normally have drunk at the bar til S&D came on stage but was driving due to aforementioned hangover….So, going to get my hands on the S&Ds albums and see if we can put our past differences behind us. rant over.
Black Kids are supposed to be brilliant. I’ve only ever thought they were ‘quite good’ but I was intending to dig a bit more, and I’m amazed to hear you hated them.
honestly – i don’t intend to amaze. i just didn’t enjoy them. but then i’m a miserablist!
True. I’ll still give them a bit of a listen, but maybe with mildly altered expectations this time.
Do keep us updated on how your penis fares this week.
Seeing as my liver is having a rest, rather well I should imagine, thank you CTel.
Sorry, instead of focusing on your penis, I should have said that you should look out for the Four Tet remix of Caribou’s Molody Day. Makes a stunning original even better.
