Toadcast #20 – The Late, Late News

Toad FM

IT disasters in Toad Hall meant that this podcast was delayed so long that I ended up posting pretty much all of it on the blog before I got to record the thing and all the news was so outdated that I had to find some more news. Fortunately we have some pre-release splendidness from Elbow, Goldfrapp and Stephen Malkmus to make up for it.

There’s also some excellent unsigned music to be had as well, from Maxwell Panther and Meursault, as well as some splendid new singles from Elle S’Appelle and Operahouse. So it’s late, but some of this stuff is really quite excellent. And then there’s LCD Soundsystem who have taken me so long to get into that I am only starting to even enjoy the album now, some eight months or so after its release. What a fuckwit.

There’s a fairly detailed explanation of what is going to be happened with Song, by Toad Records in the new year as well, and how I am going to move these podcasts onwards and upwards. Unfortunately it takes the longest bloody link in recorded history to actual explain it all, but explain it I do. There’s always the track timings listed at the side of the songs if you want to skip it altogether though! Have fun, chaps.

16 witty ripostes to Toadcast #20 – The Late, Late News

  1. Campfires & Battlefields
    Campfires & Battlefields

Now I’ve only started listening to this but I just had to comment about Liverpool. Clinic, Clinic, CLINIC! Internal Wrangler and their first EP were just brilliant. I know that’s a while ago now, but I just loved those records.

  2. Matthew

Crikey, I had no idea they were from Liverpool. And I’ve never even heard their music either. What a nonce.

  3. Drunk Country

    Old chap,

Goldfrapp = Texas. Spot on. I do no like the new one at all. Bland, with all the taste of bland removed leaving a level of bland that leaves your tongue wanting to lick paper for nurishment.

  4. Divinyl

You really don’t know The Hollies?? You HAVE to know I’m Alive, Long Cool Woman In A Black Dress and Jennifer Eccles…you must go and discover!

I actually, contrary to popular opinion here, rather liked the new Goldfrapp song you played. I do, however, generally find her/their albums underinspiring and can’t be arsed to really ‘invest’ in them (in a non-pecuniary sense). She comes from the (very small) town where I went to sixth form college, incidentally…although that has no bearing on whether I want to listen to the music or not!

I also like the 4Qs track…jolly annoying when you can find no info eh? I’ve had that a couple of times recently with stuff I’ve wanted to post about. Wouldn’t have a bleeding clue how to do a podcast, so I shan’t even think about that idea…I shall leave it to you! Anyway, as for 4Qs…sounds like another one that they missed off the Juno soundtrack; as I was going to say about Jeffrey Lewis (e.g. Back When I Was 4) should I ever have got around to that Juno post!

As for your rant on downloading and the free promo angle, I couldn’t agree more. I buy far more than my fair, per capita or whatever, share of CDs (it’s an obsession which I’m sure you understand all too well) but I do download too. I check stuff out that way…and, trust me, more artists have had a share of my hard-earned because I do!

I also know, from feedback about my blog, that people are buying the CDs of artists I have talked about…which is the point eh? To share the enthusiasm.

Right, I really must drag my bones to bed…I still have 35 minutes of this Toadcast left to go, so it would seem likely that I will be back with further arbitrary comment!

  5. Matthew

Don’t get me wrong, I particularly like that track, and there are a couple of others I really like too. It’s just an overall reaction the album – a lot of it is pretty bland.

I am still divided on how much people like us genuinely help bands make money. But I am certain there is a massive difference between sharing a couple of songs and making an entire album available on a torrent site. But then, I download from torrent sites, and I still spend every last penny on music.

  6. Jake

New convertee, not listened to it all yet. Liking Elle S’Appelle’s Little Flame. If you’resScousing for some answers to the Liverpuzzlian Vacuum then I can recommend Clockwork Orange. Recently missed them in Glasgow. Never even heard them. Pure unabashed nepotism. Will always claim to be more of a music ignoramus than yourself. Preserve my expertise for the realms of diverse obscurities…

  7. Matthew

Hello Jake – nice to see you here. Your dreadful fucking puns are almost as bad as my drunken slurring.

  8. Jake

Still classified under ‘punk’, but the 4Q’s do seem to be on myspace. At least this track appears there too… http://www.myspace.com/the4qs
Also for clarification, there’s no Orange in CLOCKWORK although their plagiarism does beggar confusion… http://www.myspace.com/clockworkmyspace

  9. Matthew

See, I’m sure that’s changed since I was last there. I went to that page, but I’m pretty sure Pieces of a puzzle wasn’t on there.

  10. Jake

I do hope you maintain some form of editorial discretion regarding these postings. I have an incredible knack of textural spoutings rather similar to your less concise links….

  11. Matthew

That ten minute one was a bit much, eh. I think I might invest in an egg-timer to stop me rambling excessively. Turning it over once is just excusable – twice is not.

    Jake's bruv

Stop swearing please….It’s not big or clever and detracts from your rambling chats.

Was directed here by Jake (my bruv). Some of the music is interesting. I love LCD Soundsystem; check out http://www.lcdremixed.com for an alternative take on that album (also suggests that you donate to various charities so it is ethically sound.

  13. Beth

Hey, how did you get the 4Qs recording?
i’ve been trying to find it everywhere

  14. Matthew

I ripped it from their MySpace pages ages ago, I think. Have they not done anything else other than this?

  15. Beth

Nope, it could be a piss take. However, a very good one.

  16. Matthew

Hmm. Well I still really like the song, piss take or not. You never know with MySpace. It takes so little to record and upload a song, it could be almost anything.
