‘Aire’ You Say? How About the Selmanaires?

Selmanaires

That smart-arse from the Daily Growl was here yesterday making clever remarks such as this one:

Never mind about being ‘behind’ (whatever that means) – that’s two days in a row you’ve posted on bands with ‘aire’ in their names. Surely nobody else has done that.

And finally, I have words I can throw right back at him.  Rich from Cable & Tweed, one of my favourite blogs, has been chivvying me along to get into Atlanta’s Selmanaires for some time now, and I have been dragging my feet more than a little, so now seemed like the perfect time to get my shit together and write about them.

The band actually describe themselves as “a bunch of punk kids who started listening to Brian Eno, Fela Kuti, and Can.”  This is quite a good description as the signature riffs often seem to come from a punky sort of place, whereas the actual landscape of the music appears to be far more of a droney/indie sort of place.  That said, there’s bits of funk, bits of surf, bits of rock ‘n’ roll and all sorts under there somewhere, but the over-arching atmosphere of the music is still drawn largely from a kind of slightly distorted growly indie aesthetic.

Their latest album The Air Salesmen is a fine piece of work, although be a little wary as it’s one it’s taken me absolutely ages to really get into.  I may have taken my time, but I’m there now and this record is something I am more than happy to recommend you all go out and investigate.

Nice! I don’t need to repeat how much I like these guys. :-)

Well it’s really taken me ages, and it’s been so gradual too. Then I didn’t listen to them for ages and ages, put the album on again just recently and just thought ‘wow’! It’s weird how that break sometimes makes a big difference.
