The Byrons

There’s not too much to tell about these guys, but they’re a new Edinburgh band and I like the way they sound so I thought I’d pop them up here.
I anything I think I might be hearing strains of Blur some time at the end of the nineties. Fortunately, I rather loved Blur at the end of the nineties, so this makes the Byrons a pleasure to listen to. It’s all a bit vague, to be honest, and their MySpace page is rather frustratingly transparent and hence entirely illegible. I’ve even tried selecting the type so it highlights itself and becomes readable, but that hasn’t accomplished much either.
All I can tell you is that they are there and I rather like the sound of what I’ve heard so far. Not so informative, eh? But they’re good, honestly, give them a listen. They do play live around here from time to time, so if I can find out a little more about them then I promise I’ll get right back to you!
The Byrons – Anglais
The Byrons – Adolf Hit
The Byrons – Azerbaijan

Bit of Blur, bit of Gorillaz (Adolf Hit), bit of quite a lot, but still uniquely quirky. Will be interesting to see what happens when they get in a studio proper. Didn’t like Azerbaijan too much, though. Felt a little constructed, despite its chaos.
Aye, well one appears to be a Proper Writer, so perhaps a little self-consciousness is inevitable. Decent tunes mind, hope they turn out to be nice blokes too.
Hell, some of us Proper Writers wear our self consciousness like an un-zipped fly during a conference speech, donchaknow?
Dare say, I do like that “Anglais” quite a bit. I wish I had more interesting local bands to like. Phooey.
It’s like a day in school.
There’s GCSE-level French on Anglais, along with cheap sounding cymbals that sound – just like the ones we used to have on our school drum-kit – struck a bit too much on the full .
There’s a passing reference to Adolf Hitler as in the AJP Taylor textbooks in History class.
Azerbaijan, like double Geography with Mrs. Blazer, is a bit dull and predictable.
Overall, listening to this lot, you’re probably having more fun than you realize at the time.
They’re playing here this week old chap, if you fancy it? I’m quite looking forward to it actually, I like their sound and it would be interesting to see how it holds up over a whole set.
Bugger. Wednesday, isn’t it?
Can’t do Wednesday unfortunately – otherwise I’d have certainly popped my head round the door – cheers!
