A friend of mine recently said that he heard them live and that in this particular instance the volume just wasn't as fierce as usual. His take on it was that when they don't blow you away with the amount of noise they create then their songs don't stand up all that well. It's also worth noting that their album is something of a labour of love: layer after layer was apparently added to the music to create something much more textured than you're ever going to hear at a gig.
