Toadcast #28 - The Fencecast
The 28th Toadcast is all about the Fence Collective. People who read this site regularly must know them, I assume, but I’ve been intending to do this post for a while as they might be my favourite label in music at the moment.
After Kenny Anderson’s last band fell apart about ten years ago or more, he started releasing his own stuff on hand made CD-Rs under the name of King Creosote and between him and his brothers and some of the other local musicians he’d grown up with in Fife, a collective started to form which has grown and grown. Now, thanks to the spotlight cast their direction by Kenny’s brother Gordon’s involvement with The Beta Band and The Aliens, the success of King Creosote and James Yorkston, and the rising of KT Tunstall (also a Fence alumnus, believe it or not) Fence Records have turned into one of the most beloved record labels in the country.
And actually, I think their approach of building a community rather than just pimping product might just have the potential to make them one of the success stories of Music 2.0, although that’s another story. So this podcast is all about Fence Records and the bands I have discovered due to their hard work, and why I think they’re great. What an arse-kisser I’ve turned into.
(Warning: I’m drunker than I sound and there is way too much talking in this one.)

Pisshead.
O bollocks. It’s always the same, always after I hit submit I think of something I should have said & wrestle with the ’should I comment again or wait until someone else does?’, but am then faced with looking like a sad, VDU anchored stalker or the next commentator saying what I have burning a hole in my tongue pocket.
Anyway, & I bet you;ve thought of or used this anyway, you could have called this (or the previous Homegame lovefests) your Fence Post.
Boom Boom.
Fence post? I don’t get it.
This music. It’s good. You should do a podcast about it, and you could even call it your Fence Post. Ha! Ha! LOL. ROGL. Ooh, I wet ‘em. That will be all.
But it’s not a post it’s a podcast. I don’t get.
(You lot are such a bunch of dicks, honestly)
I am indeed a dick, but still, doesn’t one “post” a podcast in some sense? Admit it, or I shall write “poopy” in 20 separate comments.
I’ll tell you where you can post your podcast, sonny jim.
In other news, I am playing The Felice Brothers and Samantha Crain on my first Fresh Air show on Tuesday. Just working on the playlist now.
All right, then I’ll withhold writing “poopy.” Except for just then.
Will this Fresh Air show be broadcast on t’internets, or is it for Caledonians only? I see that Coppertree Records in Wales is selling The Felice Brothers record in a 2 X 180g heavyweight vinyl pressing with doubleweight 300gsm colour sleeve and 2 X full colour lyric inner sleeves. £15, shipping included.
Also, Felice Bros. are at King Tuts in Glasgow on May 25.
It will be listenable from freshair.org.uk but I will be sure to give myself a right old plug closer to the time. So to speak.
Coppertree look like a really good label actually. I am not entirely sure that that sort of super-high value stuff is a great idea from a business point of view, but then what on earth do I know about anything.
I noticed, I noticed. Definitely like the look of that one.
Now that that’s all died down I shall post my post-post post.
Nice podcast, Toadicles.
Have you ever investigated the Drift Collective, Matthew? They’re based in Stroud and Brighton and have much of the same community spirit as Fence in a more proper English folk sense. Mary Hampton, who you mentioned you’d seen at Homegame, is one of theirs, but I’d also suggest trying out Thirty Pounds Of Bone, The RG Morrison, Tandy Hard, Matt Eaton, Birdengine and in a couple of months a psychedelically inclined solo album by Thomas White (Electric Soft Parade, Brakes, just about every other band in Brighton this side of the Kooks)
good stuff mr toad, did we meet at all at homegame ?
hello mr toad, was it your place i picked my coat up from on the sunday at homegame ?
I don’t think anyone picked up a coat, but I could be completely wrong. If it was Homegame I was either hungover or very drunk, so in neither case in a good position to retain important information.
Oh, and sorry Si, no, that’s the first I’ve heard of them. But thanks for the list - I have a whole work day to fill tomorrow and MySpace at my disposal…
Does anyone know of any sites where I can hear a few more tracks by the Skuobhie Dubh Orchestra? I can’t find anything that works and want to try before I buy.
Great pod cast btw.
I don’t know if you can buy, to be honest, although eBay might be your best bet.
Obviously there are a few issues: accent, intonation, diction without the ‘k’. I’m not referring to detection methods for your levels of inebriation. Not having a visual reference for James Yorkston possibly contributes to this quite absurd observation on my part; but I rather thought that his voice was somewhat similar to yours.
Sometimes you really must fear for the hearing faculties of your listeners.
I’d missed this postcast before, but quite enjoyed it.
Bit peeved I can’t make the launch. Then again I’m a fan of using the peevage word. Lining, clouds, silver. Quirky observation - clouds with a silver-iodide lining would probably never produce any rain.
Erm, thanks for that enlightening piece of information. Warms the silver cockles of my heart, so it does.
And, yes I have even heard your singing so I know how disrespectful to JR that comment was!!!
Woops. Misinterpreted the phenomenon of cloud-seeding. It’s unlikely that you would get a cloud with a silver iodide lining. The vapour particles would crystallise. Ah, the intricacies of meteorological engineering. Should maybe just stick to my usual meteoric engineering instead.
And I thought I was prone to meandering off on tangents…
Feedback: You dribbling old retard … sober up. Lovely music.
Yeah, this one got away from me a little, I must confess.
