Bambi Get Over It

Some more hot unsigned action on Song, by Toad: this time Norwich’s Bambi Get Over It. Norwich? Apparently. They describe themselves as folk merged with rockabilly indie. I’m not one for directly quoting PR emails particularly, but there’s not much way around this description. Perhaps if an old American folk band went completely fucking nuts. A really white folk band though, because there’s none of the gospel or blues you might associate with American folk music. Sim Eldem has a quavering, really punk rock voice though, so I guess this is where terms like anti-folk, much maligned on the Pages of Toad recently, might come into play.
I’d imagine their live shows must be something to behold. Even recorded, it sounds like George is going to break his mandolin – the pace and rhythm of some of it is ferocious. Listening to the stuff they’ve sent me I do find a couple of less successful songs, but they’ve only been going since October 2007, so it’s bloody impressive that they sound as good as they do, frankly. Bands generally take a while to settle into a proper form, but these guys seem to have got their shit together impressively quickly.
So another case where I don’t want to fawn excessively, and I have never seen them live which is always a hindrance, but there is more than enough quality in these excellent demos that I can confidently state that this lot definitely, definitely cut the Toad’s mustard. I watch their particular space with considerable anticipation.
Bambi Get Over It – Bad Man
Bambi Get Over It – Jeanie

Fucking glorious.
Bloody good, eh. Bad Man got into the Hype Machine popular list this morning. Given that list tends to be entirely made up of remixes, cover versions and heavy hitters like Radiohead and Vampire Weekend. If they keep this up we may have to get them up here for a gig and a Toad Session before too long!
Very good. I got an email about this band, but deleted it because the name was so terrible (I have to have some sort of crap filter so my inbox doesn’t overflow!). Wish I hadn’t now though.
I tend to be a lot more delete-happy with stuff coming from publicity companies. Anything from a person in a band gets a listen.
Not, of course, that you can always tell the difference.
Hmmm.. I find myself unmoved, which is odd because this should be right up my alley. Perhaps that’s the problem – not surprising enough.
I won’t write these guys off just yet though – these are only demos and it’s early days for the band, and I expect their natural environment will turn out to be the stage.
I actually thought the singer sounded a bit like that twat from The Darkness – they were from down East Anglia way too, weren’t they?
That, me laddio, is going too far. The fucking Darkness? That’s like accusing them of raping cute little puppies which, I am assured, they don’t tend to do.
There seems to be quite a thriving little scene in Norwich actually…and, I agree, surprisingly. Red Cassette, Kellie the Eagle, Sargasso Trio…to name a few. Well, I suppose they do have to find some way of keeping themselves busy!
Oh, I like Sargasso Trio but I had no idea they were from there. Never heard of the other two though, so thanks a lot for the tip off. Excellent – off to MySpace…
I apologise for my comments related to The Darkness. The comparison was only a casual observation, and not meant as an insult to any member of Bambi Get Over It. Nor was it intended to offend any member of the Song, By Toad community.
I now recognise that even a casual association with The Darkness is likely to cause the kind of disgust, emotional devastation, repulsion and anger usually reserved for serial killers, despotic dictators, multi-national oil companies, tories, seal-clubbers and Richard Clayderman.
And besides, I did like this band – these tracks show promise – I just didn’t get goosebumps. Unlike the first time I saw Justin Hawkins in a spandex leotard.
I really like Kellie the Eagle (formerly Joy Tourette)…definitely check her out. Monkey Love Records is based out of Norwich and there’s a whole site dedicated to the music scene there, although I’m afraid I forget what that’s called.
As for Bambi Get Over It…really like the tracks you’ve posted here…will definitely keep an eye on them, so thank you back!
