Live in Edinburgh This Week – 6th April 2008

Stockbridge

Well well well, another week, another flutter through the pages of Edinburgh’s virtual classifieds for the finest tuneage known to man.  Or at least, Edinburgh man.  And woman.  For this week.

Tuesday 8th April: Alex Cornish at The Ark.
Me old pal Alex will be playing at The Ark on Tuesday, so for Scotland’s finest dose of mellow, pianoey pop songs, this is the place to be. Pop up and say hello afterwards too, as he’s the friendliest chap imaginable. I’ll be away unfortunately, so I won’t be able to make this one.
Alex Cornish – This One’s For You

Friday 11th April: Randan Discotheque & Sanna at The Village, Leith
This is part of the Club Welto folk night. Randan Disco is acoustic stuff, but written with that trademark Scottish humour permeating every song, and Sanna bring some gentle electro underpinnings to matters. The Village is a top way to spend your Friday nights in general, I’d say.
Randan Discotheque – Heather the Weather

Saturday 12th April: Chippewa Falls at Henry’s Cellar Bar.
Bart’s Gentle Invasion promotion sideline are hosting this one at Henry’s. Instrumental rock is a bloody hard thing to pull off, but the only reason Bart got out of the promoting lark in the first place is that he refused to put on gigs where he didn’t love the entire lineup, and that ginger man’s word is good enough for me.
Chippewa Falls – Wolfy

Update: now definitely CANCELLED. Sunday 13th April, Make Model, Found, Frightened Rabbit at Cabaret Voltaire.
Frightened Rabbit have a new album approaching called The Midnight Organ Fight, which I am pretty interested in having a listen to, as soon as it’s possible. I haven’t given the band that much thought for a while, I have to confess, so it’s time I started to pay attention again I think. Between their indie rock and Found’s electronic indie-folky stuff – bleep hop, they call it, which makes more sense – this is an excellent lineup only slightly let down by the headline act who are no better than reasonable, in my eyes. Be a little careful with this one, as Found have it down on their site as cancelled, whereas the others do not, so it may just be that Found themselves aren’t playing, which would be a shame.
Frightened Rabbit – The Modern Leper
Found – FCN Mapa Remix

Found and Frightened Rabbit is cancelled, because Make Model pulled out.

Also Meurault and Funkspiel on Friday at Henry’s.

Also Cancel the Astronauts at Voodoo Rooms on Thursday. I really think you’d like them – it’s huge slabs of indie pop.

Also the outsider vote goes for French punk mentalists Ned at Henry’s tonight.

Also I know me doing this winds you up.

That’s why I do it.

Yeah, I saw the cancellation. Sad, because Found and FR would be a terrific bill by themselves.

French punk mentalists. Hmm. You might be on your own with that one. Funkspiel I am listening too at the moment, and have my doubts. Maybe a little too much electronica for my taste, but I’m not doing anything on Friday, so perhaps.

Cancel the Astronauts’ CD didn’t quite excite me like it might have done, so I am a little cool on them, although I should pay them the respect of seeing them live at least once before making statements like that.

And Super Adventure Club I’ve never heard of at all…

P.S. Also, Bart: fuck off.
(Nearly forgot that crucial last bit there.)

Dead Beat Club at Voodoo Rooms tomorrow night supporting the Lost Brothers.

Gutted about FOUND/FR – was well on my way to that. Definitely be at Chippewa Falls though. And Matthew, you should check Cancel the Astronauts out live – newer stuff is more mature and they are a very very tight outfit live. May head to Meursault as well to check out Funkspiel as they have been recommended to me by a friend.

Also, I’ll be playing some songs at my flat tonight – £10 entry. takers? no? oh well.

It’s not normally my thing, but I really like Cancel the Astronauts – and they grab me a lot more live than on they do on the recordings.

Not seen Super Adventure Club – they haven’t been going that long, but they got a nice write up in the skinny this month, and sound worth checking out from what I can tell from their myspace.

You’ve booked the Dead Beat Club before, haven’t you Euan? With Broken Records, if I remember. Okay, I’ll definitely promise to check out Cancel the Astronauts if I can. I’m cutting session videos on Thursday though, so unlikely to be that one.

Yeah – am good friends with Andy their main man. He writes some bloody marvelous country/folk tunes. And yes, they played with Broken Records.

Are you really Euan? TDbC were good friends of TWR/Ms Hope Eternal way back & we played quite a few of their tracks on the show (Circa 1985, in particular, will always bring on a thick-jumper by the log fire on a cold day sized smile).

Based on how good their records are, I have a feeling they are pretty damn good live too. So, Toad, get your arse over to one of their gigs.

Yeah – MrTucker is my Leith drinking buddy – though not for much longer as he is headed for pastures new – Peebles! Quiet country life for him I guess. To be honest – I really rate them live – though like Bright Eyes, Ryan Adams and other heavy boozer fiends before shows – they can be hit or miss. Their songs though stand up against most unsigned bands out there and whilst the “hip” people in the music scene may not completely understand them, I think Mr Tucker is one of the finest song writers I have heard. They are honest, funny and just plain enjoyable. So yes, Matthew, you should be checking them out both on record and live.
