Toadcast Feedback Request
Here we go folks, here’s the chance to get stuck in and give the blowhard a taste of his own medicine. You probably all know I record podcasts once every ten days or so, and I would imagine most of you don’t listen to them for the obvious practical reasons that a/ they are about an hour and a half long and b/ they are big files which take ages to download and a lot of space to store.
That said, they get plenty of downloads, so some of you must listen, although I have little idea why or what for. So here we go – I’ve been wondering some time quite how or why these things either do or don’t work for you so are there any things about the Toadcasts you either do or don’t like? Anything you’d change? Basically I am wondering about many things, but here are a couple of questions to prompt some thinking:
1/ Drunk or sober? (Actually, I’m not sure how much say you’ll have in this one.)
2/ Balance of new music to more established stuff – about right or would you prefer more of one or the other?
3/ Would you prefer a fixed length of about an hour, or just see how it goes when I lay out the playlist?
4/ Is the chatter excessive?
5/ Themed/non-themed/do you care?
Erm, anything else? Not sure. Anything you can think of I guess – just throw it all into the comment section.
The Strokes – Ask Me Anything
Toad, what you’re proposing is the loss of the sponteniety that makes your casts so much fun. Personally I’d leave them alone & continue as is.
I only discovered the Toadcast when the Daily Growl posted a link to the Broken Records session a week or so ago. Being a bit of a music geek, I’ve since been working my way through the back catalogue of ‘casts, and have thoroughly enjoyed all of them (though I’m only at #7 at the moment…)
I’ve also added your RSS feed to my iGoogle and made all my friends listen too.
So, to answer some of your questions:
I DO like folky indie pop, so keep it up! and play more new acts than golden oldies.
The “themes” are nice, though not essential, and the chatter is lovely.
You should definately do some more “sessions” too, ’cause the last one was great.
But to echo Drunk Country and render all my points redundant; the gin-fueled spontaneity is what keeps things interesting. Keep it up…
sometimes i have trouble listening to a whole show, so i’d say the length is sometimes just a wee bit too long. but i like the themes. i mean, i love the spontaneity of the podcasts, but i think it helps to have a unifying idea–god only knows what would happen if you were left to ramble without any parameters at all!
why does that winky emoticon always show up below the comment box?
I love you just the way you are.
So apart from perhaps keeping it a little shorter (Marcy) and not having such shit music taste (China) the general consensus is that they’re not very good but it would be downright wrong for them to be any other way… erm, okay!
Actually, keeping the playlist under control and perhaps sticking closer to an hour might be eminently sensible, and I’ve been thinking about doing that for a while now.
I was ranting to my girl friend the other day about music and such other when I found myself citing Toad as a profound academic authority. So please keep the comments and points of view coming because I’m just not that interesting on my own.
I recon the music balance is perfect. There is lots of new music that I don’t know, but plenty of older stuff that I am equally alien to, but that could just be me. Plus, the prevailing amount of folk is great.
Overall, keep it as it is I recon (especially the drunkenness!).
Bollocks. If the length of something is an issue, you can always go back to it. That’s the beauty of streaming & downloads.
I wouldn’t say they aren’t very good at all – quite the opposite. The chatter clatter & smatter of ums, errs & lip smacks are what makes the whole the whole.
Don’t touch it. Or you & me’ll be taking a trip to Told Off City on the Slapped Arse Express.
i think you should swear less. your mum might be listening.
other than that, it’s all peachy x
Great podcast featuring Broken Records – keep up the good work ![]()
I’ll be back to listen to your archive asap

Much as I (half-) joke about how Mrs. Toad should take over, your podcasts really are one of the very few I can listen to in their entirety. About the length, though, these things take up a lot of space on my computer because I don’t quite want to get rid of them. Make them under 80 minutes each and they can be burned onto CD for freeing up computer space.
i think you misread some of our comments–no one said they weren’t very good! we all love them and you and you KNOW we’d tell you otherwise if we didn’t. sheesh!
Your podcasts are, like, the bestest ever! You’d be a fucking dolt to change them, although I could do with more swearing and drunkenness I suppose. Could you get drunker without soiling the carpet, though, d’you think? Perhaps you could lay down some newspapers or sawdust beforehand. It’s hard to know where to draw the line.
Cheers folks, I wasn’t saying they were shite because I thought you thunk it, it was purely out of false modesty. Not that I think they’re great to listen to, just because they’re fun to do and honestly, I doubt I could do them differently. I just don’t have it in me.
If anyone’s interested, Edinburgh’s student radio station have given me an 8.30-9.30 slot for the next four weeks. No swearing and perhaps no inebriation, but legitimacy crawling out my arsehole. What fun!
I am a deejay, and I got believas! Believin’ in me-hee! =^> Soon you’ll need an entourage.
JC – how much Colorblind James Experience do you have? Toad, do you have any?
Never even heard the name, mate.
Note to Drunk Country – drop me an e-mail……
Note to Matthew………….congrats on the student radio gig. Aint No stopping You Now…..
Hey there. Long time listener, first time caller and all that. Love the ramblesome length, love the mix of establishment and rebellious youth, love the effusive love for Mrs Toad. Don’t change a thing.
Having said that, I am quite fond of the semi-political, semi-philosophical rants/musings, being quite fond of a good old rant myself. And just when you get really going you always seem to chastise yourself and ruin it all by actually playing music in your music podcast! For shame.
Oh, and drunk. Your podcasts are fantastic primarily because they somehow manage to capture that feeling of those wide-sweeping conversations on music, politics and the meaning of life I always seem to have when I’m half-pissed after a night out… And those are the best conversations there are.
I am going to print that out and stick it on the wall!
I like your podcasts just the way they are. I never can finish them in one sitting but that’s why I download them! I love the folksy indie rock, but don’t stick to that just for our sakes. I like when you push our boundaries and make us listen to something new and different. For example, I am still extremely impressed by that song “The N-Word.”
Oh I completely forgot! I love the swearing and be as drunk as you wish.
Note to JC – I done did that already

Note To Toad – Get Your Fucking Arse In Gear & Get Listening To Colorblind James Experience.
Hang on. That might be a tad tough, what with the debut album (20years old, it is, more or less) being imfuckingpossible to get hold of in anyfuckingformat.
Still, get looking for it & listen to it. You will like it.
Note to Drunk Country – get in touch with me if you’re still interested in a copy of the CBJE – debut, mate!
I only just started making my way through these. Don’t you dare stop drinking or swearing. The best bit about them are the rants! One of my friends that I shared a listen with, whilst driving, is very taken with the way you say FUCK. Marvellous.
Well I certainly have enough practise.
I just discovered your blog a few hours ago and I fucking love your podcasts. keep it up.

I’ll be honest, I hate a lot of folky indie pop. So, my solution is that you talk more, but have Mrs. Toad pick out your playlists. A perfect show!
