Live in Edinburgh This Week – 15th August 2008 (Updated)

Palm House

Sorry for missing these two little nuggets out the first time, folks, but there’s some interesting stuff going on this weekend that I (and Bart – hahahahhahahaaaa… fuck you!) missed the first time round.  Both gigs are on Saturday, so it’s going to be a fucking busy one.

The first is a bit straighforward:
Saturday 21st June 2008: Popup are playing Medina.
They’ll also bring some pre-release copies of their debut album with them for sneaky purchasers, should you be so inclined.  I don’t know much about Popup really, but they have some cracking indie-pop tunes and the one time I saw them live they were superb, so definitely a good one this, although I’ve never been to Medina so I’ve no idea what it’s like a a venue.
Popup – Lucy, What Are You Trying to Say?

This one is downright bizarre:
Saturday 21st June 2008: Found & a Shanghai Jazz Band in the Temperate Palm House at the Edinburgh Botanic Gardens.
Erm, well what the fuck can I possibly say about this?  I think I’ll be going out of sheer perverse curiosity.  The Botanics is just down the road from Toad Hall, and myself and Mrs. Toad wander about in there quite a lot when we find ourselves with a free afternoon.  Quite what the musical offerings are going to be is anyone’s guess, but Found are a superb band and I reckon I am going to give it a go.  A Shanghai Jazz Band?  The mind boggles.

I knew about the FOUND gig, but the details I have are sketchy (think the details are sketchy in general) and it clashes with the Bear Scotland night. And since you seem to be ignoring any of my contributions to the Edinburgh listings, I thought I’d cut you some slack. But never again, Matthew.

    Never again.

Though according to Ziggy they’re doing two performances, and then a DJ set afterwards – so am planning to head down after the Henry’s show.

I ignored your post about the Hollow Heart Parlour because I know nothing about it and hence can hardly recommend it. So I left it in there as a ‘Bart Recommends’ sort of thing. Although god knows why if you’re going to be like this.

I was hoping that Botanics thing would be during the day so I could do both. I take it you’ve analysed the timing in depth and have decided that Bear Scotland first and Botanics second is the best way to do everything? If so then I shall throw my lot in with you I suppose. At least someone around here has a clue what they’re talking about, albeit a tenuous one.

I think if we’re quick then we can catch found’s second set after the Bear Scotland night.
If not, probably just the DJ set.

Though I have been wrong in the past.

    It is the longest day.
Though maybe I’m taking that a little too literally.

ALSO: most exciting thing of the week is “A trip out with British Sea Power” at the Caves tomorrow night (thursday)…they’re playing a soundtrack to the film The Man of Arran from 1934 as part of the film festival….

Yeah I saw that. I just informed Mrs. Toad that we would be going and the best she could manage when I described the event was a stunned silence. This is an unparalelled achievement of bizarre artistic gob-smackery and I applaud them. I’ve been trying to shut the old mare up for years, with nary a smidgin of success.

Prince Edward Island are playing The Caberet Voltaire in July (14th, I think) – one expects you to attend…

I noted that one already. It’s a free gig too, if I recall, so no excuse.

If you get to speak to Islander Faye, punch her in the cnut for me? Ta.
