Good Luck With Welsh Boy

Wales

Given that, as far as I am concerned, I already live in something of a music Mecca – not Edinburgh per se, but Scotland in general – it only makes sense that when holiday time rolls around I should head for the other great global centre of sulky indie-folk: Portland, Oregon.

Home to so, so many great bands, home to the Pickathon Music Festival, home to more rain even than Scotland, this just seems like a wonderful way to spend the next couple of weeks.  I am working early on, in fact I have four or five interviews lined up over the course of the festival, and there will be videos made as well, but after that I am subscribing to the Mrs. Toad philosophy: “I do fuck all.”  She’s right, it’s a holiday, blogs and jobs can wait.

So I’ll be posting, but not that much.  After a couple of brilliant Campfires & Battlefields babysittings, I am handing the controls over to Dylan, Song, by Toad photographer and beer-guzzler extraordinaire.  So be nice and kind, make lots of comments to make him feel welcome, and I will be back and on the go on Thursday the 14th August.  Until then, erm, good luck!

Enjoy, you fucker. Tom Waits, and now this? Let me guess. The Builders and the Butchers, Samantha Crain and Loch Lomond will be coming ’round to your no-doubt palatial hotel room for a private gig and some s’mores?

  2. Dylan

Ooh! I’ve had s’mores round at chez Toad.

I also got a mild dose of emphysema that night from inhaling pine resin fumes, but – hey – it was a great party!

S’mores and pine resin? What sort of party was this? Oh, and a question. How do I italicize text in these comments? As an elderly person this is not something that comes easily to me.

  4. Dylan

If you want a word to appear in italics

Type this into the comments field:

    italics

    but without the asterixes.

  5. Dylan

    Oops.

  6. Dylan

Type this into the comments field:

    italics

    but without the spaces.

  7. Dylan

    Cunting fuck!

    Matthew, you show him!!

  8. Matthew

Before and after the bit you want italicised, type html tags like so: italic text except replacing the square brackets with pointy ones like these: <

This works for bold (b instead of i) and all sorts – just Google some basic html tips and it will show you.

  9. Dylan

hey toad! sorry i never emailed you! very busy couple of days…. i will still email you, on the off-chance you check it. for starters, though, my shopping recommendations: first, necessarily, is POWELLS (which literally everybody you speak to will insist you visit), possibly the most excellent bookshop i have ever had the pleasure of patronising – its main store is downtown, west burnside (near chinatown), and right round the corner on park ave (?) is my second major recommendation, JACKPOT RECORDS, which i can forsee you spending long hours in… they have this quirky habit of taping all their cds onto cardboard, which i have never fully understood the purpose of except that it does assist in flicking.

the other thing you have to do, as i’m sure you are more than capable of figuring out for yourselves, is to pick up the portland mercury, the village-voice-based freesheet that has all the gig listings and everything else… see if anything is happening at the artistry, which is a very nice diy basement venue in the north east quarter. also if you get a chance to see anybody [italics skills from upthread, thanks!] on marriage records (http://www.marriagerecs.com/), leap at it with arms outstretched and fingers clawing.

ok that’s it for now but i will try to remember to email you with other stuff.

gosh, i just looked at a map of portland and i almost started weeping onto my keyboard i so wish i was going over there this summer!

    have fun you guys.

    oooooooooops

still, i did put extra feeling into those last lines so maybe the italics are appropriate
