Song, by Toad

The Velcro Quartet

Joe Rodgers & the Velcro Quartet

Erm, given the splendidly Mojo-friendly, wonderfully grown up music I have been posting recently you may have been lulled into a false sense of slippers and Gardener’s World. This may (should) somewhat dispel these gathering clouds of maturity because, frankly, this lot have lost their fucking marbles.

Electro-glam? Surreal circus pop? Moody-electro? Yup, the lot, all in one splendidly confusing package. I am not sure any of the songs I have heard thus far really fit with one another at all, but they pretty much all tickle my fancy.

Actually, no, they’re better than that. It’s so bamboozlingly, bizarrely brilliant I want to jump around with a fucking great grin on my face and play it far too loud in the office just for the looks of totally confused horror on my colleagues’ faces. Songs about murdering your wife, the religious horror at the march of the scientific method, and a doomed lovesong rendered entirely in the banal everyday language of software.

It’s camp, it’s ferocious, it misses occasionally, and I have no idea if I’m just dazzled or genuinely impressed, but this really puts the fun right back into writing about music, really it does. They themselves describe it on their MySpace page as sounding like: “a velociraptor doing the Charleston” and a less informative but more appropriate description I cannot imagine. It’s fucking inspired, whatever it is.

  1. Jamila Fucking Dance

how come this has no comments yet! Suddenly They Realised… is bloody marvelous. been listening to it for a good three weeks and am still giggling at all the geektastic references. “that megahurtz me!”

  2. Matthew

Ah Jamila, at least someone out there has some spunk left. I think this is turning into a sensitive, middle class, middle-aged sort of blog and this sort of stuff is maybe getting left behind a little. It’s a shame though, because it’s mental and I love it!

  3. marxsbeard

yeah enough with the beigey-indie-schmindie shit.

i’ll back yez up. this is ace stuff.

the best thing you’ve posted in ages.

    ta!

  4. Matthew

I agree it has been far too sensible of late. But I have tried to dig around and find some more unusual things, just haven’t managed to happen across anything really good. Which is probably more a sign of my getting a little more boring than necessarily anything to do with the quality of music out there.

  5. Agnes

Oh this stuff is fab! Great find!

  6. Matthew

Joe has sent me a pile more songs actually. I’ll ask him what he is and isn’t okay with me doing with them, but it would be nice to pass some on.

  7. marxsbeard

i would dearly love to get a hold of some of this audacious nonsense.

  8. Drunk Country

    Genuine genius.

  9. Matthew

Not bad, eh. It really is as if some bizarre children’s programme has taken an awful lot of drugs and then gone on the waltzer at the fairground.

  10. Kevin

This is totally mental. Cannae wait to hear more of their stuff.
