Broken Records Sign to 4AD

Broken Records

Well, we have a spot of excellent news here: Toad pals Broken Records have signed to one of the best independent record labels around: 4AD.

This is brilliant news for a number of reasons: firstly, they’re lovely guys and I am genuinely delighted for them; secondly, they have worked their arses off this year, at great cost to themselves, in order to play every damn festival and gig known to man and because of the financial crisis they have been messed about quite a few times, so I’m chuffed it’s finally signed and sealed; thirdly, they were one of the first bands I ever ’spotted’, and indeed gave them their first ever write-up – not that this made any difference in the long term, but it makes me feel good; and fourthly, having them out there and making increasingly big headlines is good for every band in this city as it helps put Edinburgh on the musical map.

It’s very difficult to explain the excitment the first time you hear a brand new band who genuinely, definitely have it, and this was the first time I’d ever felt it.  I remember coming back from that gig absolutely buzzing, and tried really hard to restrain myself from frothing in the review.

They are currently recording their debut album, which is scheduled for release in the Summer.  I couldn’t be happier for the lads and Song, by Toad officially* wishes them the most sincere congratulations.  Can’t wait to hear the album lads, well done.

  1. Rampant Chutney Consumerism

Great news for a great band…..

i remember seeing them at one of the Gentle Invasion nights that Bart put on…which must be just about 2 years ago now….and they were jaw droppingly amazing!!! Which i later found out was only their 3rd gig!!!

    my day is made!!!

  2. dav

Yeah this is really ace, I’m chuffed to bits for the lads they really are a class band.

  3. Bart

Great. They deserve every success in the world.

  4. Matthew Young

I feel oddly maternal about this actually.

  5. Rampant Chutney Consumerism

    You’re allowed to Matthew…..

  6. Rob

Very very very good news, and well deserved.

  7. Dylan

I’m really pleased for the guys – they deserve this. And 4AD seems like the right sort of label for them – they should sit nicely with the rest of the roster.

By the way, have you seen the website for Monnow Valley Studios where they’ve gone to record?

    I want to live there.

  8. michael

i saw them on the second stage at connect this year which might have been the first experience on a massive stage for them i think and they really pulled it out the bag. big things for sure.

  9. Rob

Dylan, I agree. I can’t believe anyone ever gets any music done there, what with the trout fishing, caving, raft building, acupuncture, spheremania and mini-trampoline opportunities.

  10. Campfires & Battlefields
    Campfires & Battlefields

That’s really thrilling! And 4AD yet. Doesn’t get much better than that. Now perhaps they’ll find their way across the Atlantic at last. I’ll be front row, center.

  11. Tart

“I feel oddly maternal about this actually.”

    Well

    xoxoxo Tart

  12. Tart

damn, my code didn’t work on wordpress, grrr

anyway, go here for the pic

    xoxo

  13. Tart

And in all that goofiness I forgot to say how glad I am that another folkish band has “made it” and representing such a fine city! And yes Matthew you should feel proud of sniffing out such a find, and thank you for sending them our way, we all share in it now.

  14. Ben

Well, all the best to them I say. They have without a doubt written two of may favourite songs from the last few year.

Now Matthew, if you have any influence at all get them to work! The listening public requires fresh tunes!

  15. Drunk Country

Indeed, this is fantastic news for ‘Ian’ & the lads. I sincerely wish them all the very best, because I guess no matter how much they’ve sweat their bollocks dry over the last year – here’s where the real work starts. Can’t wait to heat the album also. Good ears, Mother Toad, good ears.

What makes it double lovely, in a roundabout way, is that they’re now labelmates with my 2006 ‘find’ (& now my rather lovely friend) Anni Rossi. It also shows what an excellent/innovative label 4AD still is – 2 entirely chalk & cheese endeavours, yet under that generous umbrella they make perfect sense as roomies. Exciting times.

  16. Drunk Country

@ Cf&Bf: I might be blowing steam out of my ass but I believe the guys (& Anni, funnily enough) are headed for SxSW this year. I saw their name on the bandlist over at Drowned In Sound.

  17. Tom

my word, this is good news! if only they’d signed to 4AD sooner then they could have been part of the Dark Was The Night compilation. And if only Tart hadn’t sullied the whole thing with a bloody f*ck*ng c*nt*ng lolcat…

  18. Ed

Excellent news. First saw them supporting Emma Pollock 18 months ago, and then saw them supporting idlewild and sons & daughters at other gigs. 4AD is definitely the right sort of label for them!

  19. Matthew Young

Tom, what the fuck makes you think you have to cunting well star out your fucking swear words on here you stupid fucking cunt?

And, DC, she’s your friend now is she? Is that only because you promised to protect her from the mad stalky man?

  20. Drunk Country

Anni’s been a mate for a while, Toad. That’s pre-idiot & despite being in his general/lateral company during the interview we did in Bristol.

  21. Euan

    great news. great band.

  22. teamturnip

That is great news indeed. 4AD are just about the best indie label out there and it gives them a brilliant start. Can’t wait to hear the album, I wonder which songs they’ll put on it? That is rhetorical internal monologue, no need to reply.

Man, I am well jealous, this is about as good as it gets really. Same label as Beirut, TVOTR, Deerhunter, Dept of Eagles, Scott Walker… mind-blowing.

And the studio sounds frickin amazing – I think, oddly perhaps, Definitely Maybe was recorded at the same place.

  23. morg

*Applause* Congratulations to THE band. About time.

  24. Tart

tut tut, you know you love my lolcats! and they are the purrfect companion to such a fantastic achievement too xoxo!

Once again, well done, and I’m very, very, happy to see that Anni Rossi has also been signed to such a fine label. Damn! SXSW is looking better and better now!

  25. Matthew Young

I love lolcats. I know they are stupid and puerile, but I love them anyway. So there.

  26. 17 SECONDS » January 2009…a reflection

[...] There’s other great records out as well -Antony and the Johnsons, Bon Iver, M83 and White Lies are already out, and releases from the Pains Of Being Pure at Heart, Morrissey, Western Civ and the collaboration between Horace Andy and Ashley Beedle are going to light up the musical world over the next four weeks or so. Broken Records have signed to 4AD -another band I first saw supporting Emma Pollock (and subsequently Idlewild and Sons & Daughters) -you can read all about it at Song, By Toad. [...]
