Live in Edinburgh This Week – 18th January 2009

Avalanche Records in Edinburgh sent me an email yesterday saying that they had nearly sold of their stock of Meursault albums, which was splendid news. Apparently it was the biggest seller in the shop, apart from Animal Collective, which is rather nice.
Well there’s really nothing going on this week at all as far as I can tell. Cabaret Voltaire is doing its week of Duty Free gigs, with the notable participants being Y’All is Fantasy Island tomorrow (Tuesday 20th), Jesus H. Foxx on Thursday and Dead Boy Robotics playing what is I assume a late set on Thursday night.
There’s also White Heath playing Cabaret Voltaire on Wednesday 21st,
with a band called Midas Fall, about whom I know pretty much nothing. I enjoyed White Heath’s two unplugged songs at the Song, by Toad Christmas Party, so that one should be worth investigating.

And other than that I really can’t find anything. Basically, the usual suspects are playing in the city, as one might expect, and very little from outside. I assume Limbo will be on on Thursday, but neither their website nor the Voodoo Rooms have a lineup posted, or indeed any sign that the gig will be on in the first place. Can anyone help me out here? What the fuck’s going on this week?
Did you know that the fucking View are playing here in February and that they’ve bloody well sold out? Fuck me, you might as well fill your ears with jam and stick your head in an anthill.

Now that would make a good T-Shirt!
The Pineapple Chunks are playing Limbo on Thursday. And are well worth checking out. It’s a weird hybrid of pavement, beefheart and ivor cutler. And, perhaps even stranger, they now share a drummer with the Rob St John experience.
Two Come related bands playing the wee red on Friday. On Gang and In Tokyo. (Man, I managed to make that sound really filty). It’ll be a frenzy of female drumming extravagance.
Rob’s new drummer made the most hilarious drum faces I have ever seen in my life.
I haven’t seen Come on Gang for a while actually, so I might just pop down to that.
The man is a legend.
Imagine it, then throw in mask wearing, random screamed lyrics and drum solo freakouts, and you have the pineapple chunks.
sounds awesome
i used to like pineapple chunks.
How long before you join the band, Bart?
I AM NOT A WHORE.
Ah well, that’s so easy to imagine that there’s barely any point going now.
You’ve already joined them, haven’t you?
I AM NOT A WHORE.
T-shirt!
if you’re not a whore….what are you Bart……!!!!
He’s a talented and popular performer.
thats a very subjective view Dylan
Well I am going to see Frightened Rabbit’s sold-out gig tonight at the Rock ‘n Roll Hotel in Washington, DC, a brilliant club. So ptthfthhhft.

Are you still sulking about Samamidon, C&B?
Did you enjoy the live videos, actually? They’re not bad for getting the general vibe across, I don’t think.
Yes I damn well am still sulking about Samamidon, but I really did enjoy the live videos. The fiddle shkronkalanche in particular. I eagerly anticipate the Toad Session. Did you record it at Toad Hall?
This Frightened Rabbit gig promises to be a real treat, with two very solid opening bands. David Karsten Daniels from Oregon and Arc In Round from Philadelphia. Although what with the Inauguration tomorrow and all the attendant road closures, I wonder whether I’ll ever get home again.
The Toad Session was indeed done at Toad Hall, and he did another mental fiddle bit too, which sounds fantastic.
On the 21st the Rock ‘n Roll Hotel has amateur female jello wrestling, though, so maybe being stranded isn’t all bad.
Erm, Christ.
Christ’s got nothing to do with it, thank goodness.
Those female jello wrestlers seem to lose a lot of the passion and ambition when they go pro, don’t they?
I blame the Union.
Congratulations on the success with Pissing On Bonfires…. Well done. You should get Bladen County to distribute for you over here while you sell TB&TB and Loch Lomond over there. Everybody wins. Make Edinburgh and Portland sister cities.
It has crossed my mind actually, although Catbird Records are handling the US release. It’s certainly something I’d be up for, although there’s not all that much you can do with a band who are not easily able to tour and play.
Well, one thing nice would be to get the lyrics for Meursault’s songs up somewhere. I can’t tell you how many hits I get from folks looking for them!
and Bart, just own it man. It gets easier the more honest you are about it :-p
Really? Well they are actually in the CD package, just not on teh internetz anywhere.
yeppers, loads of hits for lyrics and if you google “Meursault Pissing on Bonfires” you’ll see that the lyrics aren’t online anywhere
hmm…might have to do something about that.
Ach the lyrics are pish anyway.
I wish I had the accent to be able to say that out loud without sounding like a total prat.
but you don’t. so you do.
ha.
Hello everyone, we’re also playing Forest on Friday and Tron on Saturday which are both free unlike the Cab Vol gig.
HOLY SHIT! Frightened Rabbit’s gig last night was absolutely fucking blistering. I really like The Midnight Organ Fight, but I have to say that the live performance is waaay more dynamic than the record. For example, Old Old Fashioned and Keep Yourself Warm, neither of which particularly stood out to me on the record, were completely exhilarating and explosive live. The crowd were out of their minds, but when Scott Hutchison came out for the encore he performed Poke on an acoustic guitar without a microphone and you could’ve heard a pin drop. Just a beautiful show.
Yeah, I saw them just before Christmas, thanks to Euan, and there is a lot more life to the MOF songs in a live setting. They were good.
Hello White Heath!
