Eagleowl Live Videos

Anyone wonder where those eagleowl videos from their Valentine’s Day performance at the Bowery got to?  Well wonder no more, here they are. Any comments appreciated. Is this kind of thing helpful for bands? Apparently people are increasingly using YouTube instead of MySpace as a way of exploring new bands, so any feedback on that phenomenon would be good. How about the picture and sound quality – they’re a bit scratchy at times, but good enough I think. What do you reckon, Toadlings?

In the absence of Mrs. Toad I have to thank Jake for his work wielding one of the cameras, incidentally.  Given we had absolutely no chance to discuss what I was looking for he got it spot on and shot some very nice footage.  Thanks old chap.

A very good, warm performance I thought, and the lighting of the venue suits the melancholy mood of the music.

I liked the low camera angle or sight line on the Blanket video. I like to look up a bit at musicians as they play; put them up on a pedestal as it were.

That said, I could’ve used some dry ice fog and a laser light show.

  3. Milo McLaughlin

    gorgeous

  4. Matthew Young

I think it needs stronger lighting on the actual bands in order to get good footage in there. It was all very low contrast just because there was so little light in general. Not that it looks bad, of course, just saying.

  5. michael

think you done a great job. of course the lighting could be improved but i dont know if we would want it to be too polished. surely thats part of the magic? could have a three camera, smoke filled hd extravaganza but id rather a nice soft honest video that gives an genuine representation of the song.

  6. Euan

See if bart went to the arctic I don’t think he’d need a hat or scarf. all he’d need is goggles to protect his eyes. that hair and beard combo would do the rest.

only watched blanket. lovely stuff both musically and filmically. well done.

  7. Matthew Young

Bart has smartened himself up since these were shot. It is most unnerving – he looks positively corporate. It’ll be a suit next, mark my words.

  8. michael

maybe its the warmer weather recently. i chopped off my massive beard about a month ago and immediatly regretted doing so. or maybe he watched the video and thought something had to give?

  9. Matthew Young

I also had a fearsomely short haircut the last time. I was furious, and it’s taken me fucking ages to grow out. Fucking hairdressers and their fruity little sports cabriolets.

  10. michael

when i had a big beard someone said to me that he liked the ship captain look i was going for. only in this fucking day in age can you be a scruffy bastard and be accused of ‘trying’.

  11. mr.bear

these are tremendous!!! really beautiful… as for matthews comments regarding the lighting, i couldn’t disagree more. the ‘natural’ light gives the videos such a warm, natural feel. great work band and toad (and jake), this just made my day!

  12. Matthew Young

Some of Jake’s shots are really nice actually, and I forgot to thank him in the post which is really bad form – better put that right immediately.

  13. MartinMoog

malcolm – best hat in the game

  14. Matthew Young

It is, and this needs to be said on the record, officially the Worst Fucking Hat I Have Ever Fucking Seen In My Entire Fucking Life.

    Malcolm, burn it.

  15. randan

i think theyre great. true, a bit dark, but theres enough light to pick up the edges o things nicely. and i like malcolms hat, he looks like a character from peanuts. these videos must be massively helpful for artists, they give them a chance to see and hear what they look like on stage, and give fans a chance to see what they might of missed. i think youre doing a great service to people with them (and the toad sessions). bart with no beard? i wasnt aware he had a face under there.

  16. Jim

Great videos, well done and muchos appreciated. Feel slightly ill at the thought of Bart’s new corporate look though…

P.S. Em and I have just had a discussion on the hat and agree that you’re wrong,it’s most definitely a keeper. Mr Toad you are a man of poor taste in the headwear department.

  17. Euan

I have also gone all corporate of late. i like the feeling though. and i like malcolm’s hat too.

  18. Matthew Young

    It is a shit hat.

And Bart hasn’t shaved his beard, just brought it under some semblance of control.

  19. Jillian

these are just lovely, they make me wish this gig could happen all over again. shame i was stuck at the back…

also, i’d like to cast my vote in favour of malcolm’s hat. you don’t know style when you see it matthew, you must be getting old.

  20. Dylan

Unfortunately Eagleowl have been arranging all their gigs to coincide with Wales playing rugby – they’ve gone and done it this week too – pah!

I’ve got mixed feelings about the Bowery lighting. It really is lovely when you’re in there watching a gig – particularly something like this that responds well to the intimate feel (I bet it was great) – and I would certainly hesitate to change anything.

I do find it’s a struggle to get a decent photo in there, though. (Which you will all see shortly when I finally get the Sparrow / Withered Hand photos from last week up online later tonight.)

  21. Matthew Young

I agree with all of Dylan’s points except the first one, which is just nonsense.

  22. Andrew

    Matthew,

Where is the venue? Is it someones house, a pub, a bomb shelter. We could use some intimate settings like that here in CA for shows.

By the way…Elmer Fudd called and he wants his hat back

  23. Dylan

I think they just don’t want me to come and see them anymore.

  24. Matthew Young

It’s at the Bowery – hence the graphics in the top left hand corner. http://www.thebowery.org.uk It is by some distance my favourite place to watch live music in Edinburgh. Or indeed anywhere that I can remember being.

  25. Dylan

I nearly got the Sparrow / Withered Hand photos online last night.

Actually I didn’t really get anywhere close to getting the photos online, I arsed around playing guitar for a bit then watched From Hell on telly instead.

    Sorry.

  26. Winklepicker_Hashcakes666

nice vids, nice band, nice hat.

  27. Matthew Young

IT IS A SHIT HAT, YOU PEOPLE HAD BETTER START TO FUCKING WELL ACCEPT IT!

  28. Campfires & Battlefields
    Campfires & Battlefields

It’s a fine hat if you happen to be a lumberjack or cartoon train conductor. Otherwise though…

  29. Matthew Young

    Thank you. At fucking last.

  30. Rampant Chutney Consumerism

    i love the hat

  31. Dylan

    Who’s wearing a hat?

  32. Matthew Young

It is a shit hat whoever is wearing it. It even looked shit on Elmer Fudd and he is not real.

  33. Euan

hat of the year if you ask me.

  34. Matthew Young

Ass-hat of the year, more like.

    Much like you fuckwits.

  35. Rampant Chutney Consumerism

yeah…..i think we love the hat more than you hate it

  36. Dylan

I think we love the hat because you hate it.

i think we need some information from malcolm as to where he got the hat so we can get copycat hats
