Go On DC, Piss Off

The Waiting Room

Well, well, well, here’s a bit of news for you all.  My – well, really, our – good friend DC will shortly be leaving us for some very swanky new shores indeed.  The Waiting Room has been commissioned by WOXY, one of the few remaining really top quality independent* radio stations.

For those of you who don’t know the details, DC had an almighty falling out with his old host, Error FM, back towards the tail end of last year and quit the station in the mother of all snits.  He started looking around for a new station, and I told him that he was welcome to put his show out on Toad until he found something a little more suitable, which is why he has been gracing our Wednesdays (usually) with his blethering for the last couple of months.  The WOXY deal has been a long time in the pipeline, and there have been a lot of sealed lips for the last little while, but it has now been formally announced at last.

It can’t be overstated how impressive a result this is.  WOXY really is a very cool station indeed.  And it also can’t be forgotted how important people like DC have been to this site over the last couple of years.  I love having readers and so on, but the people who make such active and (largely) intelligent contributions in the comments mean that Song, by Toad is able to be way better than I alone could ever make it.  So go to that WOXY thread and leave gushing comments to make him look good.  They’ll be as sick of him as we are before too long, no doubt, so it might as well at least start out as positively as possible.

Well done, mate.  You and the Lady of the House really deserve this, and I am bloody chuffed for both of you.  Best of luck to you two and to the show itself.

*Although they’ve just ‘joined Future Sounds‘, about whom I know absolutely nothing.  Is this a good thing?  Enlighten me, please.

Congratulations, DC, you mad old Goat.

I hope that your good self, TWOTH and Mr. Pickles enjoy every success!

    Cheers Toad, you old softarse.

We’ll be broadcasting Saturdays 8am Eastern & 1pm GMT & again Sundays 4pm Easten & 9pm GMT. There’s whispers of a 3d midweek slot, but I guess that all depends on how well we do from the get go. The podcasts will still be available from our site, but there’ll be an on demand player available on the WOXY site also. I tell you, this is genuinely begining to feel very professional & very scary indeed.

As you say, there’s been a lot of tight lips on this mainly because of internal goings on over at WOXY & the buy-out by Future Sounds. To enlighten you to the extent that I understand it:

Future Sounds are, to all intent & purpose, a US-based PR company/collective who, like you, push the bejesus out of bands & music they feel deserve the public’s attention. They quickly expanded from humble mixtape distribution beginnings by developing a very successful PR-only CD compilation, creating & curating Future Sounds (live & launch) PR/fund raising/awareness events, eventually creating the now established London office & have effectively cemented a seriously impressive worldwide network of scouts/labels/bands/DJs/& etc. to draw from & promote to.

Their involvement with WOXY started with a Future Sounds show &, over time, their mutual passion for music seemed destined to collide on a more permanent & practical level – hence the buy-out recently.

WOXY, for those who don’t know, have an enviable history in the world of radio broadcasting – starting off as a community radio station in Cincinnati 25+years ago, in 1998 they were the first radio station in the world to simul-broadcast on the net; embracing the digital revolution way, way, way back in its infancy & when streaming was dodgy as hell & broadband was a reference to a fat bird’s trouser waist.

In 2004 hey were almost shut down due to the then owner’s willingness to jack it in until a mystery benefactor came up with the cash at the 11th hour &, I guess out of necessity rather than choice, decided to drop the physical/FM broadcasts & go 100% digital. In short, they were the first ever radio station to broadcast solely on the internet. They also simul-broadcast on 91.7 WVXU HD radio in Cincinnati – a medium fast becoming the listening post of choice, next to the internet, in the US. Which is to say they;re miles ahead of us cynical SOBs over here in the UK who have poo-poohed the whole DAB ‘revolution’.

& that’s about it. & they’re about to let us loose o their very established & fanatically loyal listernership. We’re actually very nervous indeed. Expect chaos, then, eh? & very little else (save for no swearing of any description) by way of change.

Thanks again, Toad, for allowing us the space to fart our mouthguff on a kinda weekly basis over the past few months. Truly appreciated. & thanks, also, to all the traffic from this site to ours, listening & downloading along the way – the numbers have not been overlooked & we really do appreciate your bizarre dedication to our aural effluent.

Catch you on the otherside, as they say.

oops, I forgot to say Future Sounds basically will act as a finacial injection & a source of music/promotion etc. & WOXY will, by & large, remain independent. It’s a mutual positive for both sides — or, as my American cousins are wont to say, a win win situation.
