Live in Edinburgh This Week – 1st February 2009

Snow!

Here I sit on the train back up to Edinburgh, marvelling at the snow-covered countryside and wondering idly to myself  at quite how effectively a couple of centimetres of snow seems to have brought the entire country to a total standstill.  It is, after all, just snow.  Lots of people have snow and somehow manage to keep their infrasructure from completely grinding to a halt.

Mind you, to complain seems a little churlish, and very very English, when there is snow to be enjoyed.  We are warm and on the train and it is pretty out.  Unfortunately the snow thwarted my plans to meet up with Rough Trade and Pure Groove this morning and see if they were interested in stocking the Meursault album, but now I will have to do all that by email and phone.

You’d think it was Cabaret Voltaire that burned down, not the Liquid Rooms, given how sparse their calendar has been since Christmas and once again there is nothing really going on there.  Elswhere, Limbo are very much back in business after a storming gig last week, and other than that, well, precious little as far as I can tell.  There’s Born to Be Wide on at the Voodoo Rooms before the Limbo gig on Thursday, with getting your music played on the radio being the theme this time around.  Other than that, in a live sense, I can’t find very much.  Enlighten me, please, because there appears to be bugger all going down in the capital this week.

Thursday 5th February 2009: Found, Over the Wall & Inspector Tapehead play Limbo at the Voodoo Rooms.

Both Found and Inspector Tapehead combine the acoustic and the electronic really nicely, although Found are a little more boogielicious, whereas Inspector Tapehead have a little more of a ‘bluegrass gone horribly off the rails’ sort of vibe.  Throw in the infectiously exuberant Over the Wall, and we have a truly excellent lineup.

Friday 6th February 2009: Glissando, The French Quarter & The Japanese War Effort play Trampoline at the Wee Red Bar.

I’m recommending this gig specifically because after his performance at the Song, by Toad Christmas Party I am rather keen to see the Japanese War Effort play a fuller set, with all his electronic gizmos, having been very much impressed with the more streamlined electric guitar performance in December.

Mumford and Sons tomorrow but they are sold out – boooo! Although I notice they are playing in-store at Avalanche Records at 5. This is Matt by the way: met couple of weeks back at the Bowery. Here I am! tata!

I believe a certain superstar DJ is on the wheels of steel at Born to be Wide…

  3. avatar

Copy Haho are playing Sneaky Pete’s tonight, though its looking increasingly unlikely I’ll get to see them.

Thats What The Old Man Said And He Never Came Back are playing the Ark on Wednesday. Another band featuring the drumming talents of Owen St. John (sheesh! how many bands is that guy in? I mean, really. Hell’s bells, etc etc).

    bum pie.

Hello Matt – nice of you to say hello. And sorry about being a killjoy at the Bowery, just looking out for their license.

Bart – I had a brief listen to one of the other bands playing that night as well, and they sounded okay. Might swing by for that one if I can make enough progress on the Samamidon session.

I’m playing a set of some newish songs to support Bradley Hathaway from the US of A on Sunday 8th at the GRV. I’m not usually a fan of “six strings and the truth” sort of acts, but he’s good. Very good in fact. Specially “Samuel”

    UP YOURS EAGLETITS..

Now that’s a classic. Could Neil be the one to trump Bart in the amusing quotes stakes? Although come to think of it the latter has been a bit quiet of late!

Oh, and the French Quarter are pretty decent.

And finally, I’ve started a blog!

‘Could Neil be the one to trump Bart in the amusing quotes stakes?’

    -this can only end badly.

  12. avatar

Do not take on the Bart. He’s even more ginger than Fozzy Bear.

  13. avatar

    I wouldn’t dream of it.

  14. avatar

    LONG LIVE EAGLETITS!

  15. avatar

  18. avatar

Um, apart from the five-post mentalism, that’s just horrible.

  19. avatar

    Five-post mentalism!

I don’t think I’ve ever seen five before. That’s beautiful, man.

  20. avatar

    five-post mentalism?

i don’t even know what this means but i don’t like it

cabaret voltaire are sad that you don’t think they’ve been busy programming fun live music of late. we’ve had a zillion free entry duty free gigs over the second half of january including saint jude’s infirmary’s single launch with ian rankin as guest dj which turned out to have a record attendance ever for cab over the whole night in what is traditionally the quiestest month of the year…and rob st john, be a familiar, tango in the attic, y’all is fantasy island and withered hand, fresh air’s night with chutes and come on gang! and lots of bands that you have blogged about before. we’re also sending out a lovely free mp3 sampler to everyone who joined our mailing list at the free entry shows…where have you been??!

  22. avatar

Being a sulky indie kid I should imagine. I love the idea, but not too many of the Duty Free lineups really grabbed me, I have to be honest, although I know that’s kind of the point – giving the more obscure local bands a chance, where possible.

I don’t mean to be harsh, just that there’s generally at least a couple of things every week that I really want to go to at Cabaret Voltaire, and at the moment there’s only half a dozen or so listings for all of February. They’re good ones, mind, but I was genuinely surprised to see the listings so empty.

  23. avatar

yeah, so were we to be honest…we had a few offers in for tours that just aren’t happening at the moment, maybe everyone’s worried that nobody will buy tickets cos of the recession and all that…tumbleweed….!

  24. avatar

Fucking hell, how annoying. I’m sure it’ll pick up once people calm the fuck down.

  25. avatar

this particular piece of this blog has made me laugh out loud whilst wanting to saw off my own arm in the lab. thank you.

and if you believe that ‘seals’ sing lullabies then come to see ‘share’ and ‘the second hand marching band’ on thursday 12th at the bowery. woop.

  26. avatar

  27. avatar
