Toadcast #67 – The Wuzzlecast

Toadcast

This podcast is sort of like the Clustercast should have been.  I haven’t actually listened to it yet, so I don’t know if it’s any good, but it sort of felt better, somehow.  It isn’t anything like that incoherent and garbled anyway, which is a relief.

We spent the day collecting for the lifeboats, along with some excellent help from our pals Dylan from Blueback Hotrod, Neil from Meursault, Ed from 17 Seconds, Dave, Michael and the Stormettes from The Stormy Seas and Morgan from, erm, Glasgow.  I have to point out how important their help was as well.  It’s easy to talk a good game and then to pussy out at the last minute, but despite the fact that both Neil and Ed had other things on today, everyone made the time to come down and help out, which is bloody good of them.  We collected a fair chunk of cash – Mrs. Toad’s pretty blonde colleague collected the most, rather predictably.  Maybe we need fewer beardy alt-folkies and more hot babes next year.

Enjoy the podcast, then; we’ve got a lot of nautically-themed songs this week and could have had even more.  There are loads of songs, and we had far more on the list before trimming.  It’s a bit out of control, this podcast, but actually I think it’s quite good.  Dylan’s roving reporter slots are just… well, they’re just.  They’re just. That’s what they are.  Experience them for yourself.  Good luck.

“Did you flick her nips”? Tee-shirt. Apologize to Dylan! Shame there’s no Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald on this podcast, though. Now that’s a song:

With a load of iron ore – 26,000 tons more Than the Edmund Fitzgerald weighed empty
That good ship and true was a bone to be chewed
When the gales of November came early

Sphincters aside, those Big Waves and Not Yet tunes are particularly top notch.

The Ute Lemper thing was really good too I thought. But if you like that Matthew, then it is simply impossible that you don’t like PJ Harvey. It could’ve been one of her songs.

I think it’s ‘cos he fancies her & you know what boys are like in the schoolyard…

  3. avatar

you really shouldn’t be so harsh on us folk with babies who had no option but to “pussy out”…..

  4. avatar

Hee hee. Just playing with you Euan. We had plenty of people and collected more than enough as it is, so no worries at all.

I went up to the collection centre this morning and dropped off the collection which I am assured is impressive!

A couple of points from the collection day; first, however naughty we were about old people on the padcast, they tend to be those that give most generously and make the most effort to go out of their way to give generously.

Second, the logbook for the Stockbridge collection goes back to 1971. Whilst the number of collection tins has remained roughly constant, the absolute amount collected hasn’t appreciated much since the mid 80s (the effects of rampant inflation being fairly clear throughout the 70′s). In other words, charity is becoming a tough business (I wonder if the advent of chuggers hasn’t queered the pitch somewhat).

Third, the number of collection boats we turned in was pretty impressive. The RNLI really struggle to get people to turn out. Apparently 11 students were due to help up in the West End and not one turned up! The collectors in other areas are predominantly older and retired people. Which make our relatively youthful collection crew seem even more virtuous by comparison.

In other words, not only did everyone make a much appreciated effort, they also were also some of the people least likely to do so on paper.

I can’t thank everyone enough and yes, I will be scouting around for helpers again next year so anyone that wants to do an hour’s tin shaking and then sit around drinking beer, eating apple pie with brie (!Ewwwh!) and talking shit is more than welcome to do so.

Thank you Toadlings – you rock!

Christ, sincerity on this website? There’ll be none of that!

I feel it necessary to point out that the Ute Lemper song is fucking terrible.

  8. avatar

Close, Bart. Good guess, but wrong.

  9. avatar

    BART HAS SPOKEN!!!!!!!

THE SONG IN QUESTION IS SHITE!!!!!!

    END OF DEBATE!!!!!!!

I also find it interesting that the theme tune to the Wuzzles features the line: “They’ve got originality”.

Disney’s definition of originality being “take two already existing ideas and put them together make something with elements of both.”

  11. avatar

OK Bart I’ve been on your side up until this point. I’ll say this but once…

LEAVE THE WUZZLES THE FUCK ALONE!!!!

  12. avatar

also, is it me, or is the bear/butterfly wuzzle pretty hot?

  13. avatar

…is it me, is the bear/butterfly wuzzle pretty hot?

    Bart, that’s Neil.

    Bumblelion is a pure dreamboat!

    i hate chuggers…….fact!!!

I asked one who was collecting for Shelter (which is a housing charity that advocate on behalf of homeless and badly housed people) what do Shelter do, and the reply i got went something like this…..”oh i don’t really know, something to do with housing, i think they might run soup kitchens or build houses or maybe give out sleeping bags or something like that” i nearly punched them across Princess Street.

    well done people…..sorry i couldn’t make it….but i thought i was turning into an ill pig…..

probably the only thing more embarrassing than those voxpops would have been actaully hearing the conversation which happened. It was quite funny seeing Dylan and michael try and amble throught a half pre-thought conversation while trying to sound like it was spur of the moment. I chose to remain totally silent, although I did like kirsty’s tin shaking noise effect.

Anyway I did enjoy my collecting hour i felt i had earned at least a few pints. Most of our donators were elderly, we got a flat ‘no’ from a few younger people but most just walked past and tried to pretend we were not even there! I think we raised a few quid though, which was nice, especially when you see people go away quite chuffed with their wee sticker of a boat and some life boat crew on (that was mainly children though)

I hope alot of money was raised over the day, especially by the guy in tollcross who was wearing a full on rubber suit on probably the hottest day of the year.

christ that was bloody embarrassing. thank fuck the stockbridge traffic was loud enough to drown out my abysmal weegie accent and horrible reason for choosing the song i did. however dylans reason was far worse than mine was when i think about it. i nearly pissed myself seriously.

  18. avatar

once again i have posted in my girlfriends name. apologies.

  19. avatar

Christ, I’ve just listened to this. That was massively cringe-worthy.

I am slightly curious as to what was said after my wee chat that had to be recorded over with “AND NOW A SONG”, knowing the depths of chat this thing can reach I imagine it must’ve been really quite bad!

nothing to do with the podcast or life boats, but I thought I’d share this story as it is kinda sweet:

That’s the funniest (and most dismally inevitable) thing I’ve seen in ages – brilliant!

It’s only a matter of time before they sue themselves into bankruptcy. Perhaps Gene from the legal department should walk down the hall and talk to Earl from, well, the legal department about settling this thing.

  23. avatar

Glad to have been able to help. Do we get to know a total eventually…?

Dav, the “AND NOW A SONG” bit was Matthew’s impersonation of a newsreader introducing the next segment of the news.

    I know, I know.

And he had the cheek to say my outside-broadcast bits were crap!

  25. avatar

We do, but not for ages, apparently. Kate will pass it on when they tell her, I’m sure.

Cheers Ed, it was really nice of you to come down.

[...] lamb for your efforts.  We will also record a podcast (which is inevitably rather messy – here’s last year’s) at the end of the evening, which is supposed to feature sea songs and various stuff like that.  [...]
