Live in Edinburgh This Week – 29th June 2009

Rain. Woop.

So Matthew’s plane crashed on the way back from Italy, after a rather nasty accident apparently involving a trainee pilot, gin and a difference of opinion on the work of Tom Waits.

Only kidding, folks. Matthew’s alive and well, but figured he’d be trawling through unread e-mails all day, so you have to endure my own personal brand of humour and warped self importance for one more post. Sorry.

Tuesday 30th June 2009 – I Heart Hiroshima and the Pineapple Chunks at the Bowery

I Heart Hiroshima are a three-piece Indie pop act from Brisbane, Australia, known for their “bass-less” lineup, which tends to offer a distinct sound (thank you wikipedia). Pineapple Chunks is rhyming slang for spunk (thank you google). They’re also rather deranged gararge pop goodess.

Tuesday 30th June 2009 – Findo Gask and St Deluxe at Electric Circus

I’ve still yet to see Findo Gask live, but very much enjoy the recordings I’ve heard. Maybe a bit like the synth pop of FOUND, but with a heavier electronic influence. St. Deluxe I’ve heard good things about also. Bonus.

Thursday 2nd July 2009 – The Twilight Sad, the Foundling Wheel and Adam Stafford at the Bongo Club

The Twilight Sad have a new album soon. They play loud guitars and sing and that. They’re good. Also with the cathartic noise of the Foundling Wheel and maniacal rantings of Adam Stafford (of Y’all Is Fantasy Island, or ‘yifi’ as the kids call them. Not my kids, of course. The kids. I don’t have any kids. Don’t worry, Matthew will be back tomorrow), this should be a great show.

Friday 3rd July 2009 – The Wind Whistles, Tisso Lake and Jo Foster at the Bowery

The Wind Whistles and Jo Foster both make rather charming folk pop. Tisso Lake was absolutely stunning at the recent Viking Moses show, and his set for this outing has been described as ‘synth-heavy’. Make of that what you will. Everyone should come to this. EVERYONE.

Bart, you’re a legend – thank you so much. Five pages of inbox dealt with, three more to go. Should be done by tonight.

  2. avatar

What do your kids call them, Bart?

  3. avatar

Bart doesn’t have any kids Dylan, he said that.

    “I don’t have any kids.”

    See.

  4. avatar

    He’s right.

    I don’t have any kids.

  5. avatar

Don’t let it go to your head, Bart, but your opening paragraph was the first thing that has made me laugh all day.

Not beacuse I would wish Matthew dead – but because the way it might have happened seemed plausible.

    Glad you’re back safely, Matthew : )

The Wind Whistles are rather good. I was going to say it’s nice to see this up, but then I noticed Bart did the album a few days back. He also mentioned the free to download/donate first 2 + ‘secret’ album (all worth getting your hands on, I mean even if you donate €8 per album you;re getting a very good deal on some excellently crafted stuff). So, apart from saying ‘we agree, huzzah!’, we thoroughly recommend this.

I would also highly recommend Liz Isenberg’s latest ‘Indifferent & Imaginary’. Reminds me of Milksop Holly,

    That’s great DC.

I am putting on this show, so obviously have a vested interest in people coming along, but I’m really looking forward to it. I love the Wind Whistles. And $8 is great value (it’s like £4 or something) – http://www.aaahh-records.net

How did you come across them?
They seem to tour in Europe quite a lot, but I can’t quite grasp how well known they are outside of Vancouver.

The Wind Whistles first album is an absolute classic, the songs are so instant, warm and classy. The second one is a bit of grower, well thats what i hope anyway, cos i’m not liking it as much as the first…..and everyone should just download the secret one in order that the band gets some dosh!

    Friday….can’t wait!!!

Oh, I love the new Fliberty Jibbit album. Reminds me of Meat Frocks first effort.

    :)

The albums are more like €8 rather than $8 Bart :)

They do seem to visit Europe more than anywhere else, but I think that’s because of the mutual love for the place + their music is 10 a penny in BC.

I came across them about 12 months ago (I think??) because of my constant trawling of BC radio, blogs, record labels, & the like. I love their new LP, it’s very creaky.

I cannot find tickets for Twizzle Sizzle other than some random paypal link on The Skinny’s website :( It’d better not sell out on the door!

oh do stop being a baby, Matthew, and get back to these pages properly already! As if a little bit of email catchup should keep you away. It’s exactly like when you men get a sniffle and go on about having man-flu for ages until one of us flashes so skin and wakes you from your “illness.”

But, that’s not to say that we’ve suffered through your posts, Bart, darling. Thanks for that first paragraph. Like Ed, it gave me the first chuckle of my day after a night of very little sleep. xoxox

And yes, the Wind Whistles is one of my new faves thanks to you all!

  12. avatar

er, that should read “some skin” … no idea what so skin is, and don’t want suggestions, thanks!

I will post tonight, Tarticles dear, stop pining.
