The Low Miffs – The Man Who Took on Love and Won
This is the video for the Low Miffs’ new single The Man Who Took on Love and Won. I think they are brilliant.
The band had suffered a bit of an interruption to their upwards momentum by the time I first discovered them a year or two ago, having lost a manager and a musician, and momentum is a bloody elusive quality in the music industry. They’re obviously made of more determined stuff than a lot of bands though, because theire debut album is now on the verge of being released and if this song is anything to go by it might well be brilliant.
I’ve had mixed responses from readers to the Low Miffs in the past, but they have the Mrs. Toad seal of approval (maybe she just likes Leo because he makes her feel tall) so they must be good. And I think they’re fucking superb and a joy to behold live. A preposterous, outrageous, massively over the top joy, but a joy nonetheless.
And check out Tom’s black guitar in this video. If he wakes up one morning and his house has been burgled with nothing but that guitar stolen, then I think he should probably check my house first. I can’t even play the bloody thing and it’s making me salivate.

New record is recorded entirely with Malcolm Ross of Josef K/Orange Juice fame. It’s pretty darn good if yer ask me…
i worked on the video, heard the song about 10 billion times but can’t help but love it more every time i hear it. Well done boyos!
Oh excellent. I was hoping it would be. Malcolm’s deadpan/disinterested performance in the video is brilliant.
Magnificent – thank you
MALCOLM disinterested?? I thought he was thoroughly animated. Check all other performances he’s done. The Low Miffs have brought an old dawg a new lease of life.
Oh come on! That arched eyebrow – not disinterested? I’m not suggesting that he doesn’t give a shit, just that he is playing the straight man, bored and aloof. It’s ace, it really is.
Stunning. One of the best things I’ve heard in ages. The sound of great Scottish-pop from the mid 80s with a 21st century twist.
Cheers amigo
This sort of sound isn’t really my normal cup of tea, but I think they’ve made rather a good job of this.
I’m not sure, Matthew, but I think that’s a Gretsch Anniversary with a Bigsby B6 tremolo, if you’re thinking of going shopping.
I quite like that green Jag myself.
We really should just hold up the van next time they’re on tour – they’ll never guess it’s us.
Maybe if you were in a toad outfit too, you’d make the news.
Yep. Then they’d never guess who robbed them.
In answer to the guitar droolers, I love Leo’s Teisco Del Rey, and it does the guitar solo. And their new album’s definitely worth getting hold of.
Is Leo’s dad commenting on this post as embarrassing as my dad wishing me luck on the first ever post on the Song, by Toad Records site? It must be close.
And my mum sending me messages on my first radio show saying how much she loved Withered Hand’s Religious Songs. I doubt she’d listened to all the lyrics properly…
Mind you, I’ve asked about the album with the PR chap but no luck yet. Another press friend of mine has one though, so I can always borrow that. He loves it, which is a good sign.
(Incidentally, Leo’s Dad, that was just me joking, by the way – I actually think it’s very cool that you commented. My folks do the same from time to time and it makes me laugh, but it a good way. I must get better at not making smart remarks to strangers who may not know my sense of humour well enough to know that I’m not being all that serious!)
Erm, as far as album is concerned, I sent you an email this morning. Sorry, was in Berlin til Sunday – I needed a break! Send me your address.
Innes
Yup, got it, thanks so much. Address emailed – really looking forward to the album.
I know what you mean about breaks, too. I am out of holidays for the entire rest of the year. De. Press. Ing.
