Toadcast #87 – The Paincast

paincast
Well this podcast has been recorded from my sick bed, given my current immobility.  Actually, recording the Toadcast from bed was quite pleasant, once I got over the slightly unusual surroundings.  Imagine me in my pants and scratching my balls whilst talking to you and you’ll pretty much have the ambience down pat.

I sort of intended this to be a selection of poppy little tunes from my inbox, because all the last podcasts have been so heavily themed, but instead it’s ended up a little bit on the experimental side, through no real intent of my own.  Nevertheless, if you’re happy to listen to the growl of Polvo, the monologues of George Pringle and the peculiar electro-experimentalism of Mark Linkous and Fennesz all in one podcast then, fuck it, you’re in the right place.

    Oooooh, Polvo.

  2. avatar

I’m not very keen on Polvo, but I really like Langhorne Slim and Cast Spells who I’d not heard until now.

    Hope you feel better soon!

To be honest, it took me a while to develop a taste for Polvo myself. A good friend of mine became very enthusiastic about them after seeing them play live a few times and he worked very hard to convert me, using the Celebrate the New Dark Age EP as his Book of Mormon. I really got into them just in time for them to break up, so I’m happy to hear that they’re back. Yes, In Prism is the name of the new one, and I’ve only just downloaded it from eMusic, so I can’t really say much about it yet. I wouldn’t take the comparison between Polvo and Pineapple Chunks too far either. It was just something in the angularity of the dual guitars attack and the vocal non-harmonies that tickled my memory center.

The Langhorne Slim does sound great. That sort of wobbly piano (?) effect in the middle of the tune really made me sit up and take notice. That said, A Rat’s Health is the highlight of this Toadcast for me.

I didn’t really see much to compare between Polvo and Pineapple Chunks either on the evidence of this (then again, I will argue that there are big differences between Aberfeldy, Bell & Sebastian and Camera Obscura until I’m blue in the face, so that proves very little).

Lots of great stuff on here, I’m off to see what’s on eMusic.

And thanks, as ever, for your kind words about 17 Seconds!

  5. avatar

Hmm, maybe I’ll give Polvo another go.

  6. avatar

I am definitely liking A Rat’s Health as well. I think I will be buying that album sharpish.

  7. avatar

    You won’t regret it!

  8. avatar

Do you know I’ve lived here for over four years and I’ve still never seen The Leg live. I am starting to feel a little stupid on that count.

  9. avatar

Well if it makes you feel any better I hadn’t even heard of them until last month.

  10. avatar

They don’t play too many gigs, but they’re playing at Sneaky Pete’s on the 31st Oct – it should be good. When they played at Retreat! it was up there with my favourite gigs I’ve seen in Edinburgh.

  11. avatar

Is there any way some kind soul could pick up a copy of the record for those of us who live across the wide dark sea? Or is there a label where I can order it?

  12. avatar

Actually, Matthew…you have seen The Leg live! You saw them the same night I did, when they played with Paul Vickers on the SL Records 10th anniversary gig at the Liquid Rooms, on a bill that also included St. Jude’s Infirmary and Thomas Truax. You weren’t impressed – and my mate Dave actually walke out.

  13. avatar

Ed, Paul Vickers and the Leg is apparently totally different to The Leg. As far as I have been told, they are basically just his backing band when they play with Paul Vickers.

  14. avatar

Yeah there’s a big difference, but I like ‘em both. You can buy the album from the SL records.net web page. The Leg on their own are looser and noisier.

  15. avatar

…so it’s the same people but a different act when they play with Paul Vickers? Okay….

  16. avatar

No, not quite. Paul Vickers isn’t involved in The Leg stuff. They are two separate bands.

  17. avatar

    OK! Gotcha : )

  18. avatar

phew! ive got i tunes working again i will download this later!
