Song, by Toad Christmas Party

Christmas Party 2009 V2web

This year’s Toad Christmas Party will be a bit sad really, despite still being a big old celebration, as it is the last night at the Bowery, my favourite underground music venue in the city.  They will be closing their doors after giving Toad Records and a great many of my friends a venue to call home for the last year, and this is a very great shame.

Nevertheless, this is not the season for sulking.  The Bowery will go on, just more as an itinerant hobo than a furtive squatter, and this is our chance to give them a hell of a send-off.  We have music in the bandstand from Toad Records band Jesus H. Foxx, hopefully soon-to-be Toad Records band Inspector Tapehead, and some chancer named Rory Sutherland, more commonly known as the scruffy one in Broken Records, who has put together a unique set of violin looping and erm, well I’m not sure what, to be honest.

On top of that there will be acoustic stuff through in the bar, where The Douglas Firs, Tisso Lake, Thomas Western and the returning prodigal son Rob St. John will be performing, as well as some celebrity DJs (more likely to be some of Ruth, Jane or my pals who we manage to blackmail into helping out).

Because it’s the last night, because it’s Christmas and because we have a lot of bands, everything will be starting earlier than usual, with mince pies and mulled wine from about five or so, and the first acoustic stuff should be starting at about six or seven, to make sure we have time to get everyone on stage.

It’s going to be fucking brilliant, and remember, as it’s the last night:

the bar must be drunk absolutely dry!

another awful line -up for the song by toad party.
thanks matthew, for making the last night at the bowery so shit.

  2. Matthew Young

Well I thought we might as well rub salt in their wounds!

  3. alison

indeed, you’ve got to keep things real.

  4. Matthew Young

Apparently things can get a bit too rowdy in that place anyway. I can always sense that about a place. Some might say I’ve got a ‘nose’ for it!

  5. Euan

Ok. Since you’ve not mentioned this, I will. Songbytoad’s party clashes with Trampoline’s all day event at the Wee Red. As ever, I expect to lose people to toad’s night and that’s fair enough. However, we start at 2pm and run until 10pm. It’s a fiver in. If you come along during the day but want to leave for the toad party I will let you in for £3 rather than a fiver. All you have to do is say at the door that that’s your plan and it will cost you less. Be honest though. Dinae come along and say you’re leaving and not leave. All the money goes to the artists after all.

  6. Matthew Young

That’s really good of you Euan. It’s going to be a rather heavy day for the more accomplished drinkers among us.

We’re doing an eagleowl Toad Session that morning too, so I am going to be wasted.

Vic’s DJing at the GRV aftwerwards as well, should people be born with livers of steel.

  7. Euan

Well it makes sense really doesn’t it? I’d like the support during the day, though people may still not take up the offer. But the offer is there and it means people will have 8 or 9 hours of quality music regardless. Be great if people could come to both and support all the artists. At the end of the day it’s them that suffer if people don’t come.

  8. Yashin

So no reprieve for the Bowery? I was hoping after the comments from the guy at the university settlement that there might have been hope for the girls running the place. Damn shame.

  9. Madcow

A giant appeared in my dream and told me slowly that there is no Douglas Firs at the Toad event unfortunately. Sorry!

  10. Matthew Young

Bah. Well, that was always a possibility, so no worries.

Yashin – well the Settlement will presumably want to change as little as possible, although I don’t know that. In any case, I think they rather underestimate the impact of the people involved on the success of the place, although maybe I’m wrong.

  11. Dan

    Hey guys,

just to be clear, we tried everything we could to keep Jane and Ruth involved in the space, but they want to go on and do their own things, Jane to write and Ruth to promote the music she loves. And this is a good thing I think and we can in no way stop them! We are aiming to keep the ethos of the place as similar as possible and try and keep everyone in work etc, we love it as much as you do!

See you all on the 12th,

    Dan x

  12. Dylan

“Toad” + “Session” + “Morning” = “Does Not Compute”

I’m annoyed I can’t make this as I really like Tapehead – I mean their drummer plays his kit with forks on one song-what’s not to like about that ? Euan I can make trampoline during the day if the wee red don’t mind a wee tot tagging along. Who knows, Roddy could hook up with him and do some baby gurgle-boxing???

  14. morg

I’m not going to make it either – away with work. :(

Just wanted to say a big massive WELL DONE to Ruth and Jane. An inspiration to us all. Don’t put up with pish venues … start your own. Can’t wait to see what happens next.

    Awrabest … xx
