I agree entirely about the live version - for that purpose there's just no better song. But in all honesty the new recorded version has been growing on both me and Mrs. Toad to such an extent that I think we both actually prefer the new versions now. It did take a while though, and the point about the live version still stands.

Apparently they aren't going to play the banjo + (woos & claps) version live anytime soon though, so I am really curious to see how it ends up sounding once it's been reworked for gigs.

The new version of WHM2 is, I think, the song it was always meant to be.

It's nothing less than breathtaking.

On the other hand, the jury's still out on the newer WHM1 for me. It is unreservedly growing on me each time I listen to it, but I think that song's true home is the stage. It needs to be no more complicated than Neil singing along to his banjo, while the three lads 'woo-ooh-ooh' and clap along behind him.

In my humble opinion! :)

WHM Part 2 is magnificent, and a real surprise to me because I didn't think anything could beat the EP version. I came across it too late to put it in my Festive Fifty though, dammit!

And I found 'Providence' to be a bit of a sleeper track - I didn't notice it much during my first heady listens where it was all about 'Religious Songs' and 'Love In The Time Of Ecstasy', but that track is right up there now in my faves. Love the whole string of lines that ends in being 'God's tiny carrier pigeons'. It's a wonderful song.

Yeah, I was really disappointed. I don't know where I expected them to go, in the sense that I don't think I formed false ideas about them as a band on the back of one song, but I do remember feeling utterly deflated when I heard the record. There just wasn't much there at all.

P.S. What's happened to your site, Gav?

The new version blows it clean out of the water, that's the only reason.
