Broken Records – Live at Song, by Toad, New Year’s Eve 2009
After Sunday’s Virgin of the Birds videos, these are the Broken Records songs from the New Year’s Eve house gig. The stunning Aleko, above, is an exclusive (ZOMG!!!1!), and will be the b-side to their next single.
The lads have also begun work on their second album, which will be out on 4AD some time this year, presumably, and we were treated to an exclusive preview of a song from that album, but I am not allowed to show you that on the internet because it’s a secret. See – that’s why you should come to the house gigs.
This performance reminded me an awful lot of Broken Records’ rather gorgeous Toad Session (the first ever Toad Session, in fact) because it’s not often you see Jamie with no more than violin to flesh out the sound. In fact, they played If the News Makes You Sad and Wolves on New Year’s which also featured on that session, and I had a lovely little nostalgic moment all to myself.
For those of you who are interested, the rest of our videos (and there are an awful lot of them these days) can be found here.

I love the song Wolves.
Actually gutted I missed this. Looks like a lovely way to see in the New Year. Make sure you do it again this year. Not that I’ll be able to come with a 1 year old. But make sure you do it cause it’s a great idea.
Cheers, thanks. Personally, I thought it was ideal, because I don’t like New Year’s much so just having music and gin seemed like a nice way of sidestepping it.
House gigs in general are thing I like an awful lot, actually, but I am still a little wary of inviting the whole world into our house on a regular basis.
That’s totally understandable. Plenty of weirdo’s out there. There’s a lot of trust involved in letting strangers into your home for a gig.
What’s nice about this is that BR acoustic doesn’t happen all that often. I love hearing songs in their rawest form. And as I’ve always said, a lot of their more gentle stuff is so beautiful.
Jamie’s really not up for it, out of respect for the band amongst other things, but I sometimes think something like this would be amazing in the middle of a gig – just Jamie and strings, or just Jamie and accordion, or something like that. Given how hell for leather they go most of the time, that would be amazing, assuming they trusted the crowd to shut the fuck up and listen properly of course.
That’s totally fair enough I guess. I just love hearing it. So being selfish I guess.
I agree with you, but then again the rarity also makes it special.
Agreed.
But then that’s what is special about a band like BR playing a house gig. Something totally different.
Great songs, great videos.
But what a dull fucking thread!
“I agree with you..”
“Well I agree with you more!”
Get a room!
That Aleko is a great tune, at least arranged this way. I was one of the nine watching the feed, and I remember how the “exclusive preview” tune blew my socks off. Can’t wait to hear it when the album comes out.
Other than remix or cover I am not sure if there are many other terms in blogging I dislike as much as exclusive.
C&B – those feeds should be way better quality in future, because we’ve just figured out how to use the big camera.
At least this thread wasn’t ruined by a stupid comment from Dylan
It was close though. Good focus, chaps.
I know I’m late but I just got around to reading this.
Today I would like to talk about the thing that is the thing that is “ZOMG!”
I don’t know if this is likely to make me sound stupid, but how does anyone else ‘sound this’ in their heads when reading? If indeed you do that for anything.
I have started going ” ‘zounds! ” which I think is good.
Anyone?
Zounds is better, I think.
And I always think all the possible pronounciations of pwn3d sound dreadful compared to the ‘word’ in written form, which I actually quite like.
