OK Go – This Too Shall Pass
Now I don’t want you to start thinking I want to get into the habit of just randomly throwing up videos here and there without a shred of thought, but I have to confess that the new video from Ok Go tickled me.
I am an industrial designer at Proper Job, and this is probably too geeky to admit, but the combination of that rich purple and the muddy greens of the undergrowth really is nicely judged. Sorry, I know you don’t care about that in the slightest, but there you go, I’ve said it now.
Ok Go, of course, are the chaps who did that genius treadmill video a little while back, and this may not be quite that inventive, but it’s still really nicely done. There’s a danger, I suppose, that when you gain a reputation for making clever videos that people let it overshadow the tunes a little, and I’ll confess that I found myself enjoying the song without necessarily paying full attention to the music, but then for a band who pay this much attention to the visual element of their music maybe they don’t entirely separate the two either.
In any case, I thought this was fun. The choreography is well executed, and every couple of minutes there’s something else rather funny happening. Enjoy.

This is great.
How about a ‘favorite music video’ in the friday fives some time soon?
How about this Friday, perhaps.
That works for me.
It’s all about results on this site.
I have a soft spot for this band. I’ve never really spent a lot of time listening to them, but what I’ve heard suggests they do that American-punky-pop-frat-boy-lite-agit-rock thing far better than most of their contemporaries.
They seem to also have a consistently keen eye for strong visual motifs as well, which you can obviously see in this video, along with the well-known ones such as the treadmills and the backyard dance routine.
It’s also clearly present in the video for their early hit Get Over It, which I just found on Vimeo. The video’s obviously been shot on a shoestring budget, but the inventiveness and wit of the film is compelling.
Really, really good stuff.
i like the music and the video also
nice
soo good
This video is brilliant, I bet it was loads of fun for the guys to make.
They certainly do give the impression that it is brilliant fun to be in their band, don’t they.
I can’t believe you’ve embedded this video, Matthew. Do you not realise that EMI are missing out on fractions of a penny in ad revenue by you not sending visitors to their youtube page!
They’ll live.
Somehow, they’ll live.
this made me smile. A lot.
Would I have bothered to click on OKGo’s latest video if I’d stumbled upon it just anywhere? Well, eventually, yes, probably. But I’d have been in no rush to see it, because, after all, I kind of think I know their schtick.
Oh, but when a tastemaker like Toad points it out to me? I looked right away! And, am glad I did, this quirky marching band thing has reestablished OKGo as the best of any effects-less video makers. Very impressive not just visually, but what a fine rearrangement of a middling little bit of electro-pop! Kudos to OKGo and to you, Mr Tastemaker!
Tastemaker? Erm, steady on old chap. I am not sure rambling, semi-coherent internet blowhards really deserve that kind of title.
