Friday Is A Fishy On A Little Dishy

I took a real physical roll of camera film to be developed yesterday. Haven’t done that in a while. Unfortunately the photos it contained were a series of rather grisly images taken with a fish-eye camera at a late-night after-party back at ours last weekend at Homegame.

The guy in the camera shop did look at me a bit funny when I went back in to collect them.

I didn’t bother getting real photo prints, though. I figured the photos were only going up on Facebook for a bit of a giggle, so they might as well just go straight onto a CD. There was no point paying extra for a pack of prints. Which struck me as very revealing about how we interact with photos now in the Web 2.0 world, populated with Facebook, Twitpic and Flickr. It’s like the old joke that asks when was the last time you played Solitaire with a real pack of cards.

When was the last time you looked through a real set of photos?

Matthew only asked me to compose this Friday Five late last night, and I had a panic on the bus this morning because I realised I hadn’t copied five MP3s off my hard-drive at home to put up on the post.

Then I remembered that I had meant to take a compilation CD to the Homegame mix-tape swap bin; (You drop a compilation CD off when you arrive on Friday, then return on Saturday to collect a random CD of someone else’s in return. A bit like a mix-tape Secret Santa.) but I managed to leave the CD itself at home after compiling and burning it. Luckily for us today I still had all the tracks for my compilation on my portable USB hard drive that lives in my bag.

So that has ended up giving today’s chioce of tunes the same theme as my compilation CD was going to have; classic ‘Side One: Track One’ songs.

So here’s today’s test:

1. Tell us a fishing story. Come on, everyone’s got at least one fishing story.

2. What embarassing things tend to happen around you when you stay up late?

3. What was on the last real camera film you had developed?

4. What do you do with photos you take nowadays?

5. Best Side One: Track One ever.

And here are the choons:

    2. I eat all the food.

    3. Blimey, can’t remember. Probably embarrassing pictures taken at a wedding where they’ve left those disposable cameras on the table.

    4. Nothing. They stay on the camera till it starts slowing down, then they go onto the hard drive where they don’t get looked at either.

    1. My dad trying to reclaim his fishing line from a tree, when he climbed up on the branch it snapped and he fell right in the river (ho ho).

    1. Tell us a fishing story. Come on, everyone’s got at least one fishing story.

It’s not my fishing story but it did happen to a good friend of mine. He went down to a stag weekend I could not attend and it involved a boat and deep sea fishing. Tom, accomplished fisherman and stag, showed Neil Jack how to kill the fish once he had brought it on board. Tom deftly demonstrated grabbing it near the head and breaking it’s neck. Neil Jack then tried and spent minute upon minute incompetently mashing the poor fish in the face with his tiny, weak hands until its eyes came out. Horrendous.

    2. What embarassing things tend to happen around you when you stay up late?

Giggling under the covers and making forts.

    3. What was on the last real camera film you had developed?

    Probably a primary school trip.

    4. What do you do with photos you take nowadays?

Store them and never look at them. Kind of like real photographs.

    5. Best Side One: Track One ever.

Suite: Judy Blue Eyes – Crosby, Stills and Nash

    1. When we were growing up, my brother was terrified of fish. Once my dad went fishing and brought home a massive trout and put it in the freezer. And when my dad went out I took it out of the freezer and chased my brother around the house with it. Not a great fishing story, I’ll grant you, but it brings back happy memories for me.

    2. Absolutely nothing. I’m the epitome of restraint and composure.

    3. A while ago. I had one of those action sampler things, with four lenses that split the frame up and take consecutive photos. It hardly ever worked, but when it did it looked ace.

    4. Facebook. My friend made the sad observation that it used to be when family members died they would pass on their old photo albums and diaries. These days they pass on their Facebook accounts.

    5. Too many. But off the top of my head: King of Carrot Flowers Part 1 of Neutral Milk Hotel’s In an Aeroplane….

Nothing fills me with more dread than the words:

“Dylan Matthews tagged 9 photos of you on Facebook”.

    1. I’m sure I’ve recounted my fishing story on here before. It’s the one when, as a youngster, I went out on the fishing boat in the English Channel off Kent one particulalry choppy day, and my mum had made me a Thermos flask of Heinz Tomato Soup for lunch. That’s how I know Heinz Tomato Soup tastes the same on the way back up as it did on the way down.

    2. Things like this.

    4. See question 2.

    5. Thunder Road and Neutral Milk Hotel were both on that CD I made for Homegame. For me though, the best is probably Debaser or Begin The Begin. Or maybe Baba O’Riley.

    1) I refuse to go fishing any more because I can’t pee off the side of boats. Something about the rocking makes me really nervous. Combined with beer being the beverage of choice of fishermen makes this one of the most appallingly painful experiences one can imagine.

    2) Meh, I run with a pretty sedate crew.

    3) Er, never once have I done this.

    4) I leave them on a hard drive and promise myself I will one day get them developed. It never happens though.

    5) Born in the USA by Bruce Springsteen. I deny anyone to find a more genre busting opening to an album ever.

    1. The first time I went fishing, I was 10 and I accidentally stabbed another kid with my hook when I tried to cast off. The kid screamed at me. It was very traumatic. I’ve never been fishing since.

    1. Erm, I did go fishing a few times with my little brother, but we tended to forget entirely about fishing and just talk rubbish all morning.

And Mrs. Toad and I went crab-fishing in Oregon and trying to act manly while the little bastards skittered about all over the inside of the boat was something of a challenge, especially when all my inner instincts were telling you to wave my hands in the air and squeal like a big girl.

    2. Emo4eva, anyone?

    3. We took some pictures in Nova Scotia on a little disposable, but they were rather destroyed by the x-ray machines on the way back.

    4. I don’t take many, I have to confess. But I tend not to put them on Facebook, that’s for sure.
