Toadcast #117 – Mumford & Sons Toad Session

This was without a shadow of a doubt the most scary level of military efficiency that anything even slightly Toad-related has ever achieved. Mumford & Sons were playing to a sold-out Queen’s Hall in the evening, so we had to have them in and out of the door within an hour and a half, and we actually bloody managed it! As the likes of the Pictish Trail, who left Toad Hall completely plastered after his session, can testify: this isn’t really what we’re good at around here.
So, not only did they go to extreme lengths to actually make time to record this, they did a fucking lovely job of it as well. If you watch the video for Untitled, embedded below, you’ll see that they rattled our floors so hard that something actually falls off the shelves behind Marcus at the end of the video. Gavin has done a lovely job of the recording and mixing, and many thanks to Dylan for the photography and Matthew for help with the filming.

YESSSSS finally. I must admit, I already caught the “leaked” versions on YouTube, but these are all brilliant nonetheless – the sound is top notch. Job well done, Matthew.

The cover art is all because of Dylan’s pictures, but they do look snappy, don’t they.
And of all the songs I’d love to hear a Toad Session version of I and Love and You is right up there. That would be gorgeous.
So how many people do you manage to squish into your living room for these anyway Matthew? I am amazingly jealous whenever you do these…
Generally any more than four people in the band would be difficult, just because everyone’s mics would have to point away from everyone else, but we’ve had house gigs with thirty or forty people in attendance, and it gets cosy, but not unmanageable.

This sounds absolutely amazing. I really like what they did with the last two songs, given the more stripped down setting. Songs are really nicely done.

One of the funniest things I’ve seen was the sleevenotes for the DVD release, which said the Special Features on the DVD included an ‘alternative ending’.
What? Like the ship sailing happily into the harbour at New York or something?!
