The more I read about Johny Lamb from Thirty Pounds of Bone before this session, the more nervous I became. The internet seemed to be full of all sorts of tales of him being reclusive, antisocial and very, very hard on interviewers.
Now, the press can be a little unreliable at the best of times, and personality-based reports of this nature can vary from person to person, but it almost comical how completely different this session was to my expectations. Johny was friendly, perhaps a little shy, genuinely chatty and a lovely guy. In fact, in terms of the interview podcast I think this is probably the most interesting one we’ve ever had.
Thanks are due to Mrs. Toad for the splendid bacon sarnies, to Dylan and Fiona who took the pictures, and to Matthew who did a lot of the filming. As per usual we have the podcast below, the freely downloadable session mp3s underneath that, followed by the videos we made for all the individual songs. The tracklisting for the podcast is at the very bottom of the page. Enjoy!

This is just magnificent.
Johnny gave me a lift home to Paisley from a gig in Glasgow a night or two before this session. For an antisocial person he’s very nice then!
John, If you sign in with Facebook does it mean I have to stop calling you C&B?
Jim, yeah I have no idea how he got a reputation for being prickly he was incredibly friendly.
Bill Callahan has inspired me. Perhaps I should change to (C&B) first?
I absolutely love this interview.
I agree. I think it’s one of the most interesting interviews we’ve had on a Toad Session.
Uyeasound was a proper hairs-on-back-of-neck moment wasn’t it?
Well that was academic! Lovely stuff. First shot and Johny’s neckin’ into a bacon roll, they looked well fine like.
Dylan – yep it was indeed. Especially as I have to confess to not knowing the song beforehand. My jaw just dropped.
Al – surely something long and a bit academic is more interesting than trotting through the usual pish about who your main influences are and so on and so forth!
They were good bacon rolls.
Hey that wasn’t a criticism, it definitely was/is much more interesting. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Loads of content too Matthew, it’s extremely appreciated that you took the time and made the effort to do it all.
As for Uyeasound, that’s a stunner. Get your mits on the first album if you haven’t already, Homeless Children of Migrant Mothers, honestly it’s just class song after class song, timeless stuff.
Cheers Al, thanks. It’s my one thing about sessions, actually – I think those point and shoot, one-shot, handycam sessions are a fucking waste of everyone’s time, frankly. I really do try and make an effort to give the bands some decent quality material to make use of in future, whether or not they choose to do it.
Rant over.
For now.
Wow! That was amazing!
I kinda listened to “Method” so much at the end of last year, I wore it out, so it’s great to get back on the Bone machine.
Incredibly well recorded, I must say. Cheers, Matthew.
Why thank you. I am always terrified when the usual experts aren’t around, so it’s always more relief than triumph when it turns out okay!
Johny was a vegetarian last time I saw him. Oh how his standards have dropped! Still, plays a nice tune like.
I promise we did ask in advance! Mind you, it’s always the bacon sarnies that get ‘em!
