Ghouqueu – Most of You Is Incomplete

I’ve been rather enjoying this wee free download for the last few days. There’s a bit of Yo La Tengo in here, a bit of Casiotone for the Painfully Alone, and plenty of gentle, droney goodness.

When bands like Yo La Tengo drone, they tend to do it in two distinct ways: either aggressive and discordant or, alternatively, something with a little more comfort and warmth to it.  This is definitely the latter, which I suppose is how it ends up vaguely in Casiotone territory as well, as Owen Ashworth’s music has a similar sort of feel to it.

Those comparisons apply more to the first track, the excellent Painted Bolt, I guess.  Bloodless, which follows, has a similarly hypnotic feel but perhaps moves away from the sound I’ve just described into a thicker-textured sludge of a tune.  I don’t mean that as a criticism, either, just that there is an overbearing sense of weight to the song which bears down on you more and more as it progresses.

The only track I’m not keen on is the last one.  It’s a spoken word track, over a lovely backing, but this kind of poetic-meander-set-to-music is something I am rarely that keen on. I see where it’s coming from, but I guess it’s just one of those things which has never really been my cup of tea.  Nevertheless, I am enjoying this, and would recommend you check it out.
