Vote: Song, by Toad Readers’ Top Five Albums of the Year
Vote for your top five Songs of the Year here.
Well well well, it’s that time of year again, and List Season is once again upon us. For those of us who run record labels this is pretty much just a time to fume about your releases being omitted from lists or, alternatively, fume that when included it is only at number 36, behind the sort of shit you’d be disappointed to find Chris Moyles listening to.
Anyhow, in between Christmas and New Year I shall be sorting out my own lists, but in the meantime, the ones which really matter – the Song, by Toad Readers’ Top Five Songs and Albums of the Year.
It’s simple, really. You vote by commenting below, with your top five albums of the year, in no particular order, and the albums with the most votes will be in the final top five. I’ll keep a running tally, so we know roughly who is ahead, and I think I’ll leave voting open until Boxing Day, so people get the chance to think it over.
Oh, and I nearly forgot to add this, but here are last year’s results:
1. King Creosote & Jon Hopkins-Diamond Mine
=2. Rob St. John – Weald
=2. Bill Wells & Aidan Moffat – Everything’s Getting Older

The Unthanks with Brighouse & Rastrick Brass Band – Diversions vol 2
Hot Chip – In Our Heads
Meursault – Something for the Weakened

Didnt you play a SvE track months ago?
Liked it from the first listen but just how it is crept up on me somewhat.

Meursault – SFTW
Olympic Swimmers – No Flags Will Fly
The Walkmen – Heaven
Willy Mason – Carry On
Yusuf Azak – Go Native
‘Go Native’ has been a late addition for me. I hadn’t properly listened to the previous record and it took a little while for me to get used to the singing style. But it’s grown and grown the last few weeks, and the melodies are brilliant. The Walkmen album isn’t as good as their best but I still feel it has some crackers on it (could do with having a couple of filler songs removed though). Also enjoyed Milk Maid, Beach House and the Parakeet EP amongst others.
At first I could not think of a lot to like this year. But I guess there is some:
1. Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs – Trouble
2. Django Django Django Django
2. Dirty Projectors – Swing Lo Magellan
4. Get Well Soon – The Scarlett Beast of the Seven Heads
4. Alt-J – An Awesome Wave
Actually also liked Shins, but after hearing it a bit too often it now annoys me. Great impressions, but too little (urge for) listening: David Byrne & St. Vincent, Tall Ships, Sleigh Bells, The Cast of Cheers, Tame Impala, even Purity Ring, & Daphni.
And Meursault: I respect the direction, but personally miss the synth so much, and always liked their faster songs most (The Furnace is still my all-time favourite Song).
Very tricky one this but a few standout albums this year include in no particular order
1 – The Leg – Eagle to Saturn
2 – Meursault – Something for the weakend
3 – Cold Seed – I predict a graceful expulsion
4 – I Like Trains – The Shallows
5 – Woodpecker Wolliams – The bird school of Being Human
with mentions for – Two Gallants, Twighlight Sad, Gallon drunk, Bo Ningen and Glissando
Some good shiiiiiiiiit out this year…
1. Ariel Pink’s Haunted Grafitti – Mature Themes
2. Woodpecker Wooliams – The Bird School Of Being Human
3. Stealing Sheep – Into The Diamond Sun
4. The Leg – Eagle To Saturn

1) Bob Dylan – Tempest
2) Meursault – SFTW
3) The Leg – Eagle To Saturn
4) Paul Heaton – Presents the 8th
5) Caspian – Waking Season
I so nearly put Jake Bugg on that list, Bob Moulds album is good too.

2. Meursault – SFTW
3. Woodpecker Wooliams – The bird school of Being Human
4. Glissando – The World Without Us
5. Two Gallants – The Bloom and the Blight
Honourable mentions to Hubby, BJ Houghton, Bo Ningen (too much of a live band for me for their recorded stuff to ever do them justice tho) & Olo Worms (although can’t shake the suspicion they’re completely insane)
1. Breton ‘Other Peoples Problems’
2. The Walkmen ‘Heaven’
3. Hooded Fang ‘Tosta Mista’
