Vote: Song, by Toad Readers’ Top Five Songs of the Year
Vote for your top five Albums of the Year here.
So, with voting for the readers’ top five Albums of the Year underway, I thought we might get the ball rolling for the songs of the year.
Once again, in no particular order, write down your five top songs, preferably in the following format, so I can add them to my spreadsheet a little easier:
Band Name – Song Name
Just as wee refresher, here are the five you chose this time last year:
1. Rob St. John – Sargasso Sea
2. Bill Wells & Aidan Moffatt – The Copper Top
=3. P.J. Harvey – The Words That Maketh Murder
=3. The Twilight Sad – Sick
=3. King Creosote & Jon Hopkins – Bats in the Attic
Happy voting, and hopefully see those of you who are Edinburgh-based at either Christmas Baubles or Christmas Songwriters tonight.

Get Free – Major Lazer
If you are aware of Major Lazer but not a fan of dancehall based electronica you might not have noticed this little atypical beauty, featuring a lovely vocal from Amber of Dirty Projectors.
Lay Your Cards Out – Polica
I like tracks that make it by the skin of their teeth and this fits. Mournful but with some serious flammy drums and enormous crashing fills. Shouldn’t but it does.
Maiden – MØ
The Thai/Hi Life guitar motive at the top got me straight away, then a nice generic slightly distorted female vocal runs along a vaguely far eastern melody leaving enough mystery to dream to.
Work – A$AP Ferg
Strange how some hip hop, when you hear it quiet seems to emphasise all the negative cliches associated with it, but then, when you turn it up and feel the bass, the cliches become profound.
Feel The Love – Rudimental ft John Newman
Not strictly the song but the song with the video, although the tune, looping round, building the kind of tension you remember from when you were a kid, waiting for tickles, manages to take basic a pop D&B structure and morph it into a small mystical experience… with a trumpet solo! But add the video of horses being ridden through the snowy streets of super-urban Detroit and we have a proper moment.
Oh shit, I forgot about Ankle Shackles.
Matthew, can you add another category for favourite songs to play face-melting guitar solos along to?
