Toad and Ruth on Fresh Air – 3rd March 2011

Ruth and I are back on Fresh Air Radio once more this evening, live from 8pm for an hour and a half.

Ruth now has her own blog as well, so for those of you who tire of my wittering and crave a little bit more eclecticism in your world, then go and have a gander at Find Me in the Archives.

This week I have some songs from my Manchester post this week, and will be scarpering immediately afterwards to try and catch what I can of the FOUND album launch at the Voodoo Rooms.  Factorycraft is out on Chemikal Underground right about now.

Toad and Ruth on Fresh Air – 24th February 2011

Ruth and I are back on Fresh Air in a couple of hours, so it is naturally time for much rejoicing on the airwaves of the interwebs. In fact, I am sure the internet could barely be more excited about the prospect than it clearly is already.  Can’t you see it trembling with anticipation?

While we’re indulging in hyperbole, incidentally, last week the unbelievable happened: Ruth was genuinely impressed with one of my music choices.  I think it was Do It Every Time by Ringo Deathstarr, but the shock when she raised her eyebrows and said ‘this is really good’ rather than just rolling her eyes and letting out a weary sigh almost knocked me clean out of my chair.

On air from 8pm UK time – click here to listen live.

As per usual, if you have any trouble with the audio stuttering (a problem which seems to be solved now) just pause and un-pause the player, or find us in the ‘College Radio’ section on iTunes.

The playlist will appear below, as we play it, so feel free to stop by and heckle.

1. TuneYards – Bizness
2. Joni Mitchell – Little Green
3. The Honey Pies – Get it Right
4. Dr. Dog – Breeze

Toad and Ruth on Fresh Air – 17th February 2011

Ruth and I were back on Fresh Air Radio last night, but due to all sorts of massively annoying database problems with the site, I couldn’t put up one of those live playlist updatey things like I usually do, which was really kind of frustrating.

After spending last term more or less missing one another every single show I must confess I am looking forward to getting things right in 2011 and the chance to spend an hour and a half every week bickering with the old trout about music.

So given you had no opportunity to agree with Ruth about how fucking awful my taste in music is, I thought I would at least post the actual playlist online so you can see what we played and have a think about whether or not you can really be arsed tuning in next week, by which time my Toady IT problems should be well and truly behind me.

01. Mountain Man – How’m I Doing
02. Ringo Deathstarr – Do it Every Time
03. Rob St. John – Whites of Our Eyes (Toad Session Sneak Preview)
04. P.S. I Love You & Diamond Rings – Leftovers

14. Black Tambourine – Throw Aggi off a Bridge

Toad on Fresh Air – 10th February 2011

Yes indeed, I am back on Fresh Air tonight, once again sans Ruth, but she will be back next week apparently, which is good news.

For today, however, you are stuck with me sitting in a room by myself blethering away about nothing at all, which is pretty much par for the course, but I promise that as of next week that blethering will be interspersed with liberal helpings of Ruth telling me that my music taste is fucking shit.  We’re a cute little double act like that.

Live on air from 8pm UK time – listen live here.

As per usual I will be updating the playlist live below as we go along, so feel free to chip in in the comments and let me know how incredible (no really, incredible, no matter what you think) the playlist and chat just happen to be this week.  Anyone mentions the word shit and they’re getting punched.  Through the internet.  Punched through the internet.  Oh dear.

01. Li’l Daggers – King Corpze
02. Lift to Experience – To Guard and to Guide
03. Josh T. Pearson – Sorry for the Song

Toad and Ruth Back on Fresh Air Tonight

So, after several weeks of half of us being there, or me being in bloody Aberdeen doing launch nights and so on, Ruth and I are finally reunited on the internetwaves of Edinburgh’s student radio station at long last.  Just in time, I believe, for the last show of the term.

I assume there will be plenty of catching up to do, and I have plenty of new music for Ruth to scoff at, so it should all be good, festive fun.  I may even bring in a couple of Christmas son… no, fuck that, that would be awful.  Just one, maybe.

Click here to listen – live from 8pm UK time.

If you have any trouble with the player on the Fresh Air site, just pause and un-pause it and that should do the trick.  Alternatively, you can stream it through iTunes, where it is listed in the college radio category.  We’ll be updating the tracklisting live as we go along, so feel free to jump into the comments and make smart-arsed remarks – like you ever need any encouragement anyway.

1. Au Revoir Simone – Fallen Snow (FOUND’s Broken Lock Refit)
2. Anthony & The Johnstons with Bjork – Fletta
3. Phosphorescent – A Picture of Our Torn Up Praise
4. The Maladies of Bella Fontaine – Longsocks
5. Dr.Dog – Shadow
6. John Lennon – Watching the Wheels
7. Jason Lytle – Liquid Hyper Tweeker Energy Drink

Song, by Toad on Fresh Air – 11th November 2010

Whee, back on the radio.  And for some reason tonight’s playlist is going to consist of lots of pretty well-established artists.  There is no reason for this at all, it just worked out that way when I was selecting the playlist.

Nevertheless, I find myself focussing so much on new music that the old stuff kinda gets neglected these days.  I have actually stopped listening to my digital music collection for pleasure, and now only listen to vinyl when I am actually listening for the pure enjoyment of it.  This isn’t an ideological stance against digital music, more a logistical one.  The drive with all my music on is now upstairs, and I haven’t been arsed to set up a link to the stereo yet.

Live from 8pm (UK time) – listen here.

As per usual I will update the playlist live below as I go along, so feel free to chip in with any suggestions and comments and assorted smart-arsed remarks you might have.

1. Sleepy Horses – Lubbock Love Song
2. Paul Simon – Graceland
3. Casiotone for the Painfully Alone – Optimist vs the Silent Alarm
4. Casiotone for the Painfully Alone – Graceland
5. Paul Simon – Adios Hermanos
6. The Scottish Enlightenment – Necromancer
7. Jesus H. Foxx – Elegy for the Good Times
8. Droney Mitchell – An Empty House (Droney may actually be Rob St. John.  Just perhaps.)
9. The Savings and Loan – Pale Water
10. Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds – Fifteen Feet of Pure White Snow
11. White Antelope – Silver Dagger
12. Saint Etienne – Like a Motorway
13. The Maladies of Bellfontaine – Black Biro

Toad and Ruth Back on Fresh Air Tonight

Fresh Air, after giving its hard-working students an entirely deserved and not at all excessive four months off over the Summer, is back on the interweb airwaves this week.  And you know what that means, don’t you?  Yes, Ruth calling me names for an hour and a half while we play songs!  Hooray!  Kind of.

We’ve been off the air for ages, and I actually haven’t seen Ruth all that much in the intervening time, so it will be nice to have a chat and catch up, although I promise to try and do most of that whilst the songs are playing so as not to bore you too much.

Live from 8pm (UK time) – listen here.

The player on the page linked to above can be a little flaky, so just pause and un-pause it and that should sort it out.  Alternatively I am pretty certain you can find us on iTunes quite easily.  We’ll be updating the playlist live below as we go along, so feel free to chip in with comments during the show and we’ll… well, probably just tell you to piss off, really.

1. Meursault – Crank Resolutions
2. Jackson C. Frank – Blues Run the Game
3. Sweet Baboo – I’m a Dancer
4. Onions – I Want to be a Dancer
5. The Decemberists – Down by the Water

Lach Live on Fresh Air Radio

As I have mentioned many times on these pages, Lach has been in Edinburgh this Summer to host an Edinburgh version of his legendary New York anti-folk open mic night, the Antihoot, as well as his own one-man show The Day I Went Insane.

There are some videos of Neil from Meursault and Yusuf Azak performing live at the Antihoot here, and those of you who probably read this page far more regularly than you should do may also have noticed the fact that Lach was also kind enough to guest on the Fresh Air radio show I do with Ruth.

Given that the CD players weren’t working, so neither Lach nor Ruth could play their song choices, and the fact that we ended up almost exclusively chattering rather than interspersing much music I suppose you could say it wasn’t the snappiest show we’ve ever done, but we have since recorded a far more disciplined (well, okay, slightly more disciplined) Toad Session with Lach, and we have these rather good videos from his Fresh Air Session too.

Toad and Ruth on Fresh Air

Ruth and I are back on Fresh Air this evening, no guests this time, but hopefully Ruth will remember to bring her music on a USB stick, so you might actually be afforded the privilege of hearing her musical choices, rather than simply having to listen to her sniping about mine.

Listen live here from 7pm BST.

For anyone interested in some Neil Pennycook and Yusuf Azak solo acoustic videos and a bit of a review of the first night, click here.  In the meantime, we’ll be updating the playlist live as we go along this evening, so feel free to heckle us in the comments as we go along.
