Adam Stafford released his fantastic album Imaginary Walls Collapse on Song, by Toad Records early in 2013. You can buy a copy on vinyl here if you like, but it won’t tell you quite as much about Adam as I am hoping this session might.

Adam is a film-maker as well, and has a genuinely eclectic taste in music, of the sort that makes me feel really rather ashamed by my own tunnel vision. He made a rather fantastic mixtape for the excellent Gold Flake Paint a while back called Magnatory Baws Prolapse which (despite its rather rotten name) reminded me all too strongly of everything that is wrong with my own taste in music – as well as being brilliant to listen to, dammit!

This session was recorded by myself, with photos by the ever-awesome Nic Rue, with the filming done by Gavin White and Ian Greenhill and the videos all edited by Gavin.

Todd Umhoefer from Old Earth came to Scotland on a sort of holiday/tour late last year and Song, by Toad collaborated with his UK label Mini50 Records to put on shows in Glasgow and Edinburgh, and we also took the chance to record a Toad Session as well.

Old Earth were actually spotted by Mini50 because of a post on Song, by Toad so it seemed rather fitting to work together to make the tour and the session happen. This was another one of those sessions which ended with Mrs. Toad making an amazing meal, and with us all drinking an absolute shitload of wine and playing records late into the night.

There was something of a skeleton crew this time around, with Rory Sutherland helping me out with recording and cameras, and extra video help by Steven Tonge. Rory also edited all the video for us this time, which is why it looks rather more stylish than usual!

Wait a second, haven’t we already done a Sparrow and the Workshop Toad Session? Why yes we have, and it is here. But if you follow that link you may well understand why we’ve recorded another one.

Basically, back then I didn’t really have any idea how to record and mix things, I had no idea how to export video properly, and YouTube was in a 640×480 format, meaning that everything looks like it should have been embedded on a Geocities site, not a swish, modern music blog. So we sat down with Broken Records, Meursault and first Sparrow and the Workshop and did whole new Toad Sessions with them because, well because they live locally and we’re all friends and fuck it, we can.

So this is the second Sparrow and the Workshop Toad Session. The photos were by Nic Rue, as is becoming increasingly traditional, and her fella and fellow long-time Session veteran Rory helped record and also film, along with Ian Greenhill. Gavin White, who also filmed the session, was kind enough to edit it for us. His stuff is on Vimeo under the name of Full Fridge Video.

Toadcast #279 – The Yawns Toad Session

This session was recorded back in March, so once again I find myself apologising to the band for taking so long over it. I blame Beer vs. Records, Sparrow and the Workshop and the Pale Imitation Festival for taking such a lot of time and work that I ended up distracted. The same old disorganised shite as usually happens, in other words.

The Yawns emerged late last year when they released their debut album as a pay-what-you-want download to pretty much no fanfare at all. Slowly but surely, however, word seemed to spread around the internet and it turned out that a lot of people were really into the record. I was released on tape by one label, then vinyl by another and actually ended up doing better than loads of stuff people put all their time and energy into promoting.

I loved it too, of course, so I asked them to play in Edinburgh in January, and then I enjoyed the show so much a Toad Session ensued. And this is it.

Many thanks to the team once again – Gavin, Rory, Matthew and Ian who helped with the filming, Rory who took the photos, Neil who recorded it and Mrs. Toad who made AWESOME brownies! And, I suppose, to the cats, for not massively disrupting everything like they usually do.  Puss-tards.

Charles Latham has been something of a legend in Edinburgh ever since his song Hard On became something of a staple in the Withered Hand live set, and also occasionally appeared when other bands, like our own Meursault for instance, played live as well. The Withered Hand version proved so popular that it actually made its way back across the pond, when Toad Session alumnus Samantha Crain covered it a year or two ago.

Funnily enough, though, he’s never actually been to Edinburgh, at least until November last year, when he came over here on tour, played a gig in the city and popped by to record a Toad Session. And the Withered Hand version had made such an impact that Charles himself didn’t even want to play it!

Nevertheless, we have four excellent songs for you, a genuinely interesting interview, and a night which started with beer and ended with macaroni cheese and vinyl. A win for all concerned, I think you’ll agree.

Toadcast #260 – Woodpecker Wooliams Toad Session

This was recorded at Toad Hall in October 2012 with Woodpecker Wooliams, who releases with our friends Robot Elephant Records. She played at a BAD FUN night on the Friday at Henderson’s at St. John’s, and we were finally able to get this recorded on Sunday after the hangovers had subsided a little.

We were rather short of personnel for this one, so the whole thing ended up being recorded and filmed by me and Ian, with only the one other body to help out – the awesome photographer Nic Rue, with whose work you are all probably very well familiar by now.

For some reason Gemma only chose to play three songs, and we rather stupidly managed to run out of camera battery before the end of the third, so there is no session video for Crow, although the mp3 can be freely downloaded below as usual.  And for the first time in a Toad Session you get to properly meet one of our two new cats, who we’ve had for over a year now, but who are not quite as determined as Floyd to make themselves the star of the goddam show at every available opportunity.

Toadcast #258 – Samantha Crain Toad Session

Video: YouTubeVimeo

This is another one of those painfully late Toad Sessions which crashed into the bottleneck created when we recorded five sessions in a very short space space of time at the end of 2011 and then ended up putting most of them on ice when the label took over my life in early spring.

Nevertheless, this is a lovely session, and as an acoustic one it is also something of a change of sound from the recent ones.  Sam had played one of our gigs the previous night at Henry’s Cellar Bar with Withered Hand and Mike MacFarlane, and the next day we recorded a session and promptly buggered off to the pub for a few pints.

Thanks are due to Neil from Meursault who recorded this session, to Dylan Matthews for the photos, video camera work and excellent leftover turkey sandwiches, and to Ian Greenhill for helping with the filming, as well as for being gracious enough not to make me re-export all the videos after forgetting to add him to the credits because we recorded this damn thing so bloody long ago.

As per usual, mp3s of the session tracks can be downloaded below for free, then there is the full interview podcast (tracklisting at the bottom of the page) and then the four individual session track videos, with the main video at the top of the page.  Cheers – Woodpecker Wooliams in a couple of weeks!

Toadcast #250 – The Black Tambourines Toad Session

Videos: VimeoYouTube
Photos: Flickr
Audio: zip download – mp3s below

For the utter shame of it, we actually recorded this Toad Session back in December last year.  I know we can be a little tardy publishing these fuckers, but this has to be something of a record.  I blame the fact that The Leg, The Foxx, Meursault and the Split 12″ albums all ended up being released within a month or so of each other for knocking me firmly out of my stride, but well, there’s always an excuse isn’t there.

We actually recorded this on the Monday after a fearsomely brilliant gig at Henry’s Cellar Bar last Christmas, and did a session with the brilliant Joanna Gruesome on the same day. It was a bit rough, just a little bit like hard work, and I have no idea how the neighbours decided not to complain to the coppers, but I hugely grateful that they didn’t.

Massive thanks for this one are owed to Dylan Matthews and Ashley Hampson for their video camera work, to the consistently awesome Nic Rue for taking the pictures, and to Rory Sutherland for helping me with the recording, the mixing, and for also wielding a video camera during the session itself.

Toadcast #214 – Kid Canaveral Toad Session

Video: VimeoYouTube
Photos: Flickr
Audio: zip download – right click, save as

I am rather embarrassed to confess that we recorded this session absolutely bloody ages ago.  First the Festival, then the mixes, then intervening sessions, and finally just the sheer amount of time these take to edit managed to delay things.  But now, finally, at long, long last here it is: the Kid Canaveral Toad Session.

This was another relatively messy, drunken one I’m afraid.  We were nice though – we made them dinner and supplied them with a beverage or several, and it happened to be a nice day too, so we were even able to sit out in the garden for a bit.

The team this time around consisted of Neil from Meursault, who recorded the session (and I hope I’ve not offended him with my mixes!), Fiona and Dylan who took the photos, and Dylan also did a lot of the video work as well.  And cooked. Whereas I just sat around, drank beer and swore at people mostly.

Toadcast #211 – Josh T. Pearson Toad Session

Video: VimeoYouTube
Photos: Flickr
Audio: zip download: right-click, save as

This session was recorded in Glasgow before Josh’s performance at Oran Mor on 22nd November last year.  The first attempt to record a session with him was at Stereo, but recording in a venue really didn’t work out, so this time we decided to take up the kind offer of Phil from PAWS to record it in his bedroom instead.

Again we were a little pressed for time, because Josh had a marathon day, recording a session with the BBC and conducting an interview before doing our session, and then having the gig to play afterwards.  So we only recorded three songs, and for simplicity’s sake we did the interview in one chunk and I have just chopped bits of it into the podcast where appropriate.

Given the incredibly punishing schedule he tends to have I really do appreciate Josh taking the time to re-record this session, as well as the infallibly good humour and cooperative nature showed by both himself and Peter and Tom, his management team.  It may have been tight to get done, but this is a really, really nice session if you ask me.

As usual, the videos can all be found on our Vimeo and YouTube pages and the photos, which were jointly taken by Stephanie Gibson and Dylan Matthews, are collected on our Flickr page.  The session mp3s can be downloaded below, or in a zip file here, the session podcast can be played or downloaded below too, and the tracklisting for the podcast can be found at the bottom of the page.
