Stephen Malkmus & the Jicks – Real Emotional Trash

To say that I absolutely love Stephen Malkmus’ solo work would be an exaggeration, but to say that I only like it would seem to be badly understating the matter. What’s in the middle then? Well I’ll try and explain.
For some reason, I love listening to Stephen Malkmus’ solo records. I was never a Pavement fan, although I haven’t looked into their stuff as much as I perhaps should have.  Somehow, though, The Jicks do it for me. I know I said that I hate prog, and there are massive proggy whiffs emanating from all of Malkmus’ solo stuff, but for some reason I just don’t find it objectionable. Imagine a sort of laid back West Coast rock ‘n’ roll that casually slips into those meandering prog solos I mentioned before.
What is it about this musical wanking that is somehow really enjoyable to listen to as opposed to other proggy muscial toss? Well I genuinely couldn’t tell you – perhaps, like the more meandering moments from Wilco’s past, there’s a little more direction to it. I couldn’t tell you exactly what I mean, but the music always seems to be moving forward, somehow.
Whilst as yet I can’t claim to love this album quite as much as Face the Truth, I’d say this is another fine bit of work from a bloke who is slowly becoming one of the mainstays of my music collection. I don’t get the impression he’ll ever ascend to legend status, but he is right in there with the good ‘uns.
